Sana Mir at the center of World Cup controversy

The ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 has seen plenty of on-field drama, but off the field, former Pakistan captain and commentator Sana Mir has found herself at the center of a storm. The respected broadcaster sparked outrage after an on-air remark referring to Pakistan batter Natalia Pervaiz’s hometown as “Azad Kashmir,” prompting accusations that she had politicized the broadcast.

Mir made the comment during Pakistan’s opening match against Bangladesh while discussing the team’s composition and the challenges faced by younger players. She said:

“…captaining a very young side. Yes, they have won the qualifiers, but a lot of these players are new. Natalia, who comes from Kashmir, Azad Kashmir, plays in Lahore a lot cricket. She has to come to Lahore to play most of her cricket there.”

The statement quickly spread online, drawing sharp reactions from Indian fans who accused Mir of making politically loaded comments on a global broadcast.

“Azad Kashmir” is the phrase used domestically within Pakistan to refer to Pakistani-controlled Kashmir.

Fans demand ICC action

Social media was flooded with calls for the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take action. Many users demanded that Mir be removed from the commentary team, questioning how the broadcaster could allow such remarks to go unaddressed.

One angry fan wrote:

“Just a gentle reminder Sana Mir is still in the commentator panel after this comment…Yahi dum hai aapka @BCCI or @ICC?”

Despite the online outrage, Mir continued to appear in the commentary box, including during Pakistan’s high-voltage clash against India in Colombo, which further fueled debate on social media.

Sana Mir responds to backlash

Facing mounting criticism, Mir issued a public clarification on X (formerly Twitter), explaining that her comments had been taken out of context and were purely meant to highlight player journeys — not politics.

She began by expressing frustration over the extent of the backlash:

“It’s unfortunate how things are being blown out of proportion and people in sports are being subjected to unnecessary pressure. It is sad that this requires an explanation at public level.”

Clarifying her intent, Mir wrote:

“My comment about a Pakistan player’s hometown was only meant to highlight the challenges she faced of coming from a certain region in Pakistan and her incredible journey. It is part of the story telling we do as commentators as where the players come from.”

She further added:

“I did that today for two other players coming from other regions, too. Please don’t politicise it. As a commentator on the World Feed, we are meant to focus on the sport, teams, and players, highlighting inspiring stories of grit and perseverance. There is no malice in my heart or any intention to hurt sentiments.”

In an attempt to support her explanation, Mir also attached a screenshot of her research source, noting:

“I am also attaching the screenshot of where I research most of my players from, whether from Pakistan or any other country. I realise that they have changed it by now, but this is what I was referring to.”

ICC retains Mir on commentary panel

Despite the uproar, Mir has continued in her role as part of the ICC Women’s World Cup commentary team, appearing on the world feed that services international broadcasters. She was seen on-air during Pakistan’s subsequent fixtures, including the marquee India-Pakistan encounter, where she shared the studio with India legends Mithali Raj and Anjum Chopra.

Her continued presence has drawn mixed reactions — while some fans remain critical, others have praised the ICC for focusing on her professional credentials rather than public pressure.

Context and significance

The controversy comes at a time when cricket relations between India and Pakistan remain fraught, and every interaction between the two nations on or off the field tends to attract scrutiny.

For Mir, one of Pakistan’s most accomplished cricketers with over 200 international appearances, the episode has served as a reminder of the fine line commentators must walk when speaking on global platforms.

As the Women’s World Cup 2025 moves forward, Mir continues to contribute to coverage, emphasizing her intent to “focus on the sport, teams, and players,” while urging audiences to separate sporting storytelling from political interpretation.
