Quetta Gladiators, the former Pakistan Super League (PSL) champions, have appointed Sarfaraz Ahmed as their new team director ahead of the 10th edition of the tournament, which is set to begin on April 11. This comes after the 37-year-old former Pakistan captain, who was released by the franchise and went unpicked in the PSL Player Draft, was given the new responsibility.
Sarfaraz’s appointment follows reports suggesting that, after being left out of the draft, he could replace Shane Watson as the Gladiators’ director. Watson had decided to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts with other commitments. Now, Sarfaraz will take on the role of team director for the franchise.
Sarfaraz’s journey with Quetta Gladiators dates back to the inception of the league in 2016. Over the years, he became a central figure for the team, leading them to their maiden PSL title in 2019. During his time as captain, Sarfaraz played 86 matches, amassing 1525 runs at an average of 29.32, including seven half-centuries.
However, his leadership role ended in the 2023 season when he was replaced by South Africa’s Rilee Rossouw as the team’s captain. Despite no longer captaining the team, Sarfaraz remains deeply tied to the Gladiators, and his return in this new role is seen as a promising move for the franchise as they look ahead to the upcoming season.
