Thursday’s IPL 2025 fixture involving Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals has drawn significant attention — not just for the abrupt match cancellation partway through the first innings, but for the evolving explanation behind them. While initial reports pointed to a technical issue at Dharamshala’s HPCA Stadium, IPL and BCCI officials later confirmed the real reason behind the disruption: security concerns linked to regional unrest in Jammu and Kashmir.
May 8 match called off, May 11 match moved to Ahmedabad
The confusion centers around two fixtures between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC). The first match, scheduled for Thursday, May 8, was called off entirely halfway through the match. The second match, slated for Sunday, May 11, has been relocated from Dharamshala to Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
What was first seen as a local power issue quickly escalated into a broader safety and logistics challenge, prompting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to intervene.
Early reports blamed floodlight failure
Initially, the cancellation of the May 8 match in the 11th over was attributed to a technical malfunction at the stadium.

However, shortly after that announcement, IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal revealed that the decision was not due to infrastructure problems, but rather a precautionary response to security incidents in nearby Jammu.
According to Dhumal: “Yes, the match has been called off as a precautionary step, because there are some incidents which happened in Jammu, I believe. That’s what we got to know, so we thought it’s wise to call off the game,”
Airport closure adds to logistical pressure
Adding to the complexity was the temporary closure of Dharamshala’s airport — a key access point for players, teams, and officials. With the May 11 match still on the schedule, BCCI decided to shift it entirely to Ahmedabad.
“With the airport in Dharamsala closed, it would have been a huge logistical challenge for everyone involved,” said Devajit Saikia, BCCI Secretary. “Purely due to logistical reasons, we’ve decided to move the match to Ahmedabad.”
According to reports, players, staff and even owners (including Punjab Kings co-owner Preity Zinta) were evacuated from the area by train given the airport closure.
The Narendra Modi Stadium, which boasts the world’s highest seating capacity for a cricket ground, will now host the May 11 fixture between PBKS and DC.
BCCI tries to reassure fans foreign players are comfortable but meets to assess future
Amid public speculation over player sentiment and tournament stability, BCCI was quick to try to calm nerves, asserting that international players had no objections.
“They are quite comfortable,” said Saikia, “Everyone in the league is comfortable.”
Later in the day, however, Dhumal confirmed to PTI that the IPL and BCCI were continuously reviewing the situation: “It is on as of now but obviously it is an evolving situation. A decision will be taken keeping the best interest of all stakeholders in mind. We haven’t received any directive from the government. We are reviewing the situation right now.”
A rare mid-season disruption as playoffs loom
The dual disruption — a match cancellation followed by a venue change — is highly unusual at this stage of an IPL season. As playoff contention heats up, teams now face added challenges of schedule changes, travel adjustments, and unfamiliar playing conditions.
