Construction of the Shiv-themed International Cricket Stadium in Varanasi has reached 92% completion, with the landmark venue on track to be finished by September. The ₹400 crore (approx. US$42 million) project, being developed by the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA), is expected to become one of India’s most distinctive cricket venues while expanding the state’s capacity to host major domestic and international matches.
Designed to accommodate around 30,000 spectators, the stadium is expected to play a significant role in strengthening cricket infrastructure across eastern Uttar Pradesh, creating new opportunities for players from the Purvanchal region while supporting sports tourism and local economic activity.

Landmark venue blends cricket with Varanasi’s heritage
One of the stadium’s defining features is its Shiv-inspired architecture, reflecting the cultural and spiritual identity of Varanasi.
The media centre and North Pavilion are being built in the shape of Lord Shiva’s damru, while the floodlight towers are inspired by the trishul. The entrance incorporates the belpatra motif and the roof has been designed to resemble a crescent moon, creating a venue that combines modern sporting infrastructure with the city’s historic character.
Alongside the main international-standard playing field, the complex will include a full-sized practice ground to support both elite-level matches and player development programmes.
Government outlines project’s significance
The Department of Information and Public Relations, Uttar Pradesh, said in an official statement posted on X: “Under the leadership of Chief Minister @myogiadityanath ji, continuous and effective steps are being taken to provide better facilities for sports and athletes.
मुख्यमंत्री @myogiadityanath जी के नेतृत्व में खेल और खिलाड़ियों को बेहतर सुविधाएं उपलब्ध कराने के लिए निरंतर प्रभावी कदम उठा रहे हैं।

“In the same vein, the international cricket stadium under construction in Varanasi, inspired by the theme of Lord Shiva, is emerging as a historic project that will give a new identity to the state’s sports infrastructure.”
The Uttar Pradesh government has supported the development by providing land on a long-term lease, fast-tracking administrative approvals and establishing an electricity substation near the venue through the Chief Minister’s Rapid Development Fund to ensure reliable power supply.
Built for international cricket
The stadium has been designed with facilities for players, officials, broadcasters, media and spectators, including modern dressing rooms, a pavilion, dedicated media and broadcast infrastructure, high-capacity floodlights, advanced security and fire safety systems, spectator amenities and parking for around 1,500 vehicles.
The UPCA is funding the entire project through its own resources, underlining the association’s long-term commitment to developing cricket infrastructure across Uttar Pradesh.
Long-term boost for cricket and the regional economy
Once operational, the venue is expected to host domestic and international matches while providing world-class training facilities for players from Varanasi and across the Purvanchal region.
Beyond cricket, the stadium is also expected to strengthen sports tourism and generate economic benefits for the region by supporting local businesses, hospitality, transport and trade. Construction remains on schedule, with completion targeted for September before the venue begins preparing to welcome major cricket events.
