A bold global play in franchise cricket
In a landmark move signaling the growing international influence of Indian cricket ownership, Sun TV Network has announced the full acquisition of Northern Superchargers, a leading team in the UK’s The Hundred tournament. The deal, valued at £100.5 million (₹1,161 crore), marks Sun TV’s most ambitious overseas investment to date and places it at the forefront of cricket’s expanding global franchise landscape.
The acquisition was cleared by Sun TV’s Board and is expected to close by December 31, 2025, through a cash transaction conducted via authorised banking channels under the Reserve Bank of India’s automatic route. Once finalized, Northern Superchargers Limited will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sun TV Network.
This latest investment significantly enhances Sun Group’s footprint in the world of franchise cricket, complementing its existing ownership of Sunrisers Hyderabad (IPL) and Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SA20). With the addition of Northern Superchargers, Sun now holds stakes in three major T20 leagues across India, South Africa, and the UK, enabling a cross-continental presence rarely matched in the cricket industry.
A new chapter for The Hundred and English cricket
The acquisition covers 100% of the Northern Superchargers, including Yorkshire County Cricket Club’s 51% stake and the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) 49% share. This is believed to be the first complete franchise acquisition in The Hundred by an IPL team owner, reinforcing the growing interest from Indian stakeholders in international T20 properties.
According to a senior analyst cited in The New Indian Express,
“It represents a bold step toward establishing a unified global presence in the evolving world of T20 franchise cricket, while also offering financial and structural support to English domestic cricket.”
The Superchargers, based in Leeds, represent the North East and Yorkshire regions, playing their home games at the historic Headingley Cricket Ground. Since the inception of The Hundred, the franchise has drawn significant interest thanks to its star-studded squads, strong brand identity, and consistent financial performance.
Strengthening the Sunrisers brand across continents
With this acquisition, Sun Group is moving toward a consolidated global cricket identity. Analysts say this deal helps extend the “Sunrisers” brand across three geographies—India, South Africa, and now the UK—paving the way for shared talent pools, coaching structures, and performance systems across all teams.
The move is also expected to unlock media and monetisation opportunities, especially given Sun TV’s stature as one of India’s leading broadcasters. The company can now explore the development of exclusive content, digital streaming platforms, and new sponsorship models across its portfolio of teams.
Financial strength and operational synergy
The Northern Superchargers have shown consistent financial growth, with revenues of £1.89 million in FY24, £1.99 million in FY23, and £1.49 million in FY22, underscoring the commercial viability of the UK cricket market.
Owning franchises across three continents also allows Sun Group to centralize backend operations—marketing, logistics, data analytics, and scouting systems—for improved efficiency and reduced costs.
However, integrating a UK-based team into a broader Indian ownership model will come with challenges. Analysts caution that balancing the local fan identity of the Northern Superchargers with the global Sunrisers brand will require strategic communication, especially with English audiences protective of their regional cricketing traditions.
What’s next for the Superchargers?
With the 2025 edition of The Hundred scheduled from August 5 to August 31, Northern Superchargers are set to compete with a highly competitive squad. On the men’s side, the team features Harry Brook, David Miller, Adil Rashid, Zak Crawley, Mitchell Santner, and Dawid Malan. The women’s team includes top international stars like Annabel Sutherland, Phoebe Litchfield, Georgia Wareham, and Kate Cross, among others.
As the first IPL franchise owner to fully enter the UK cricket market, Sun TV’s acquisition sets a powerful precedent for the globalisation of cricket franchises. With a £100 million commitment, Sun Group is betting big on the commercial potential of The Hundred, while reinforcing its ambition to lead the sport’s next phase of international growth.
