Sri Lanka’s current professional cricketers today announced the formation of the Sri Lankan Professional Cricketers’ Association (SLPCA), a representative body established by players to represent, support and advocate for the country’s players.
The formation of the SLPCA comes at a landmark time for Sri Lankan cricket, following a sustained period of positive progress and reform across the sport in the country, including the work of the game’s transformation committee to strengthen governance and modernise the domestic structure.
The new Players’ Association reflects a shared commitment from the players to building on that momentum, and to ensuring the sport continues to evolve and future-proof itself for the benefit of everyone involved in the game.
The establishment of the Sri Lankan Professional Cricketers’ Association reflects the continued evolution of the game in Sri Lanka. Alongside the governance reforms and transformation work already underway, having a genuine, organised player voice is another important step toward a modern, collaborative game that is aligned with international best practice.
Inaugural SLPCA President, and current men’s white ball captain Kusal Mendis, said:
“We’re proud to have established SLPCA to represent Sri Lanka’s players at this important time, and we look forward to working constructively and collaboratively with Sri Lanka Cricket, the Transformation Committee, and other stakeholders as cricket continues to grow.”
Sri Lankan women’s captain, Chamari Athapaththu said:
“Through the work of the Transformation committee, we have already seen great progress in Sri Lankan cricket. The setting up of the Players’ Association is another important step forward and sees Sri Lankan cricketers join many of our international colleagues in cricket and other sports who already benefit from effective player representation.”
Sri Lankan men’s player, Binura Fernando, said:
“Sri Lanka has always been a strong cricketing nation. As players we are proud and excited to have come together to establish the Players’ Association for the benefit of current and future generations and to help grow the game we love.”
Sri Lankan men’s player, Wanindu Hasaranga, said:
“The players felt the time was right to come together to show our collective commitment to a strong and professional future for Sri Lankan cricket. We are looking forward to working in partnership with the game’s leaders.”
