Dale Benkenstein departs as Men’s Head Coach
Lancashire Cricket has announced the departure of Men’s Head Coach Dale Benkenstein by mutual consent, following a disappointing start to the 2024 season. The decision comes as the Club looks to reset and improve its on-field performances amid early struggles and last season’s relegation.
Mark Chilton, Director of Cricket Performance, commented: “Following a difficult start to the season, we feel that now is the right time to make a change. Results have not improved so far this year, and after much consideration, both Dale and I feel the team will benefit from a new direction.
“We thank Dale for his hard work and commitment and wish him the best for the future.”
Steven Croft appointed interim head coach ahead of Vitality Blast
Former Lancashire captain Steven Croft has been appointed Interim Men’s Head Coach and will lead the First Team into the Vitality Blast opener against Worcestershire Rapids at Emirates Old Trafford. Croft will take training today and be supported by William Porterfield, Craig White, and Karl Krikken.
Croft is a Lancashire legend who made over 600 appearances for the Red Rose before retiring last year. He was awarded his Lancashire cap in 2010, played a key role in the 2011 County Championship-winning side, and captained Lancashire Lightning to the 2015 T20 Blast title.
Coaching transition rooted in player development
Since retiring, Croft has focused on his coaching career, working with the Second XI and Academy, and gaining experience with England Under-19s. His deep roots within the Club and strong relationships with the players make him a natural fit for this interim role.
Mark Chilton: “Steven is a Lancashire legend, highly respected in the dressing room, and has been working incredibly hard on his coaching career. His experience and connection with the team will be invaluable as we move into the Vitality Blast.”
The Club now enters a key phase of the season with Croft at the helm, looking to reset momentum and deliver results in the white-ball format.
