T20 World Cup becomes defining moment for Gambhir’s tenure
A high-stakes global tournament is set to shape the immediate future of India’s coaching setup, with Gautam Gambhir’s position now under closer scrutiny than at any point since his appointment. While his success in limited-overs cricket has strengthened his standing, recent Test results have triggered internal debate within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), according to a report by PTI.
The discussion gained momentum after India’s home Test series defeat against South Africa last month, a result that intensified questions around the team’s red-ball direction despite Gambhir remaining under contract until the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Red-ball record raises concerns after South Africa setback
India’s struggles in the longer format have become difficult to overlook. Under Gambhir, the team has suffered multiple defeats in SENA conditions and endured a disappointing home series against South Africa, leaving the side sixth in the ongoing 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle with nine Tests still to play.
Those remaining fixtures include overseas tours of Sri Lanka and New Zealand before a marquee five-Test home series against Australia in early 2027. With the Test calendar tightening, uncertainty has crept into discussions around whether Gambhir should continue overseeing red-ball cricket beyond the short term.
BCCI explores options while stopping short of a decision
In the aftermath of the South Africa series, the BCCI reportedly informally reached out to former India batter VVS Laxman to gauge his interest in coaching the Test side. Laxman, however, made it clear he was content continuing in his current role as Head of Cricket at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, effectively removing the most obvious alternative from immediate contention.
A BCCI source, speaking to PTI on condition of anonymity, indicated that Gambhir’s position is closely tied to India’s upcoming T20 World Cup campaign. “Gambhir does have strong backing within the power corridors of Indian cricket and obviously, if India retain the T20 World Cup or at least reach the final, he would be seamlessly continuing with his assignment. However, it would be interesting if Gambhir continues in Tests too,” the source said.
The same source pointed to the lack of viable red-ball replacements as a factor working in Gambhir’s favour. “His advantage being (that there) aren’t too many alternate options in red ball format since VVS Laxman isn’t interested in coaching senior Test team,” the source added.
Gambhir defends his record amid growing speculation
Gambhir himself has pushed back against suggestions that his overall performance warrants immediate change, highlighting his achievements in white-ball cricket when questioned after the second Test against South Africa. “I’m the same guy who won the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup as well,” he said, underlining his role in delivering major limited-overs titles.
Those successes have helped maintain strong support for Gambhir within sections of the board, even as the Test side grapples with form and clarity around roles. Reports indicate that some players have felt less secure in the current environment compared to the previous regime, adding another layer to the ongoing assessment.
Decision likely after global tournament
The BCCI is known for adopting a measured approach to major structural calls, and the timing of the T20 World Cup provides a natural pause point. With the Indian Premier League following immediately after the tournament, decision-makers will have a broader performance window to evaluate whether to continue with a single head coach across formats or move toward a split coaching model.
For now, Gambhir’s immediate future appears safe, but the coming weeks could prove decisive. As India prepare for the T20 World Cup, results on the global stage may determine not only silverware, but also the direction of Indian cricket’s coaching leadership.
