Another major global investor has signalled its interest in the Indian Premier League, underlining the competition’s growing appeal among sovereign wealth funds, private equity firms and institutional investors seeking exposure to one of the world’s fastest-growing sports properties.
Speaking in an interview with Reuters, Vishesh Shrivastav, Managing Director at Temasek India, confirmed the Singapore state investment firm is exploring opportunities in the IPL, although he declined to identify any franchise it is evaluating. Shrivastav said: “IPL is a marquee property and we remain interested in it.”
The comments represent Temasek’s first public confirmation that it is considering an IPL investment, adding another prominent name to the expanding pool of global investors pursuing franchise ownership opportunities.
Institutional interest in the IPL continues to build
The IPL has increasingly attracted interest from international investors as media rights revenues, commercial partnerships and franchise earnings continue to drive valuations higher.
As previously reported by cricexec, Royal Challengers Bengaluru was acquired by an Aditya Birla Group-led consortium at a US$1.78 billion valuation, a landmark transaction that highlighted the growing financial strength of IPL franchises and the increasing willingness of global investors to back the league.
According to U.S.-based investment bank Houlihan Lokey, the IPL’s enterprise value has now exceeded US$18.5 billion, reflecting its continued commercial expansion and strengthening position within the global sports industry.
India remains a strategic market for Temasek
Temasek has substantially expanded its presence in India over the past decade, with its portfolio exposure growing to approximately US$42 billion. The firm continues to focus on sectors including financial services, consumer businesses and healthcare, while also evaluating opportunities in sports investments where they align with its long-term strategy.
Shrivastav indicated the firm would be prepared to move quickly should the right opportunity arise. He added: “For the right opportunity, we would jump on it.”
Temasek’s existing investments in India include Haldiram’s and Manipal Hospitals, with its latest comments reinforcing the IPL’s emergence as an increasingly attractive destination for long-term institutional capital as franchise values continue to climb.
