A large crowd gathered outside the JSCA International Cricket Stadium in Ranchi ahead of the Jharkhand T20 League final, resulting in a stampede-like situation that left three spectators injured before play got underway. According to a PTI report, the incident unfolded at the West Gate as thousands of fans attempted to enter the venue at the same time, prompting an immediate response from police and security personnel.

Crowd builds before the final

The final attracted an unusually large turnout, with free entry drawing spectators to the stadium well before the start of the match. As more fans converged on the West Gate, congestion intensified and the pressure at the entrance led to pushing and jostling, with reports also indicating that barricades and parts of the entry area were damaged during the commotion.

Police and security officials moved quickly to disperse the crowd and restore order, while additional personnel were deployed to manage access to the venue. Once the situation was brought under control, spectators were allowed to enter in a more orderly manner and the final proceeded without interruption.

Police launch investigation

Providing an update on the incident, Rakesh Ranjan, Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police, said, “The incident occurred due to an excessive crowd. The situation is under control. Police are looking into it.”

Authorities also confirmed that the three injured spectators were taken to a hospital for treatment and that their condition was stable. A detailed investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances that led to the crowd surge.

Eyewitness accounts describe the congestion

Witnesses said the situation deteriorated around the West Gate after the match began as large numbers of spectators continued trying to enter the stadium. Amid the congestion, some fans reportedly attempted to climb over the stadium wall to gain entry, further adding to the disorder outside the venue.

Despite the disruption outside the venue, officials ensured the situation was contained, allowing the Jharkhand T20 League final to continue as scheduled while investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
