Vaibhav Sooryavanshi‘s rapid rise through Indian cricket has gathered further momentum after the 15-year-old was included in India’s preliminary plans for the 2026 Asian Games, strengthening the view that the Rajasthan Royals opener is moving closer to national honours. According to a report by PTI, Sooryavanshi has been named in a 30-member list of probables submitted by the BCCI for the Games in Aichi-Nagoya, with India set to manage overlapping commitments between the tournament and a home white-ball series against West Indies.
The inclusion comes on the back of a remarkable IPL 2026 season in which Sooryavanshi finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer. The left-hander amassed 776 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate above 237, collected the Orange Cap and established himself as one of the most talked-about young players in world cricket.
Asian Games opportunity opens up
India’s planning for the Asian Games has been shaped by a scheduling clash with the West Indies series, forcing selectors to prepare a wider player pool capable of serving two separate assignments during the same period.
Among the most notable developments is the absence of both T20I Captain Suryakumar Yadav and ODI Captain Shubman Gill from the longlist. Gill is expected to be involved in India’s ODI commitments against West Indies, while the broader selection strategy has created opportunities for emerging players to push their case for international recognition.
Several established names remain under consideration, including Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Arshdeep Singh. The leadership options for the Asian Games squad are understood to include Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma.
BCCI backs teenage star’s development
Sooryavanshi’s performances have not gone unnoticed within Indian cricket’s leadership. Speaking to reporters after the IPL 2026 final in Ahmedabad, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia expressed confidence in the youngster’s future.
Saikia said: “It was a wonderful season. I hope all the fans have a lovely time during this IPL, and congratulations to RCB for winning the tournament consecutively twice. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is a wonderful player coming up, and he has a bright future. BCCI will do everything to get him to the highest level of cricket.”
The teenager’s breakthrough year extended beyond sheer run-scoring. He became the youngest player to win the Orange Cap and also finished the tournament with one century, five half-centuries and a record 72 sixes, surpassing Chris Gayle’s previous single-season mark of 59.
Calls for India selection continue to grow
As debate around Sooryavanshi’s future intensified during the IPL final in Ahmedabad, former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja revealed that he had directly raised the subject with India’s selection Chief.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Jadeja said: “How much better can he perform? I saw the chairman and asked him ‘Mr. Chairman! When will you pick Vaibhav Sooryavanshi? If not now, then when? Irrespective of his age, how could anyone possibly bat better than this?”
The question reflects a wider discussion surrounding whether Sooryavanshi should move directly into the senior national side or continue progressing through the established pathway that has already seen him feature prominently in age-group cricket.
His credentials extend beyond the IPL. Earlier this year, he played a major role in India’s Under-19 World Cup triumph and has since been selected for the India A squad that will compete in the upcoming ODI tri-series in Sri Lanka.
Selectors outline their approach
While excitement around Sooryavanshi continues to build, India’s selectors have indicated that development remains the immediate priority.
Speaking at a press conference while announcing India’s squad for the Afghanistan series, Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar explained the reasoning behind placing the teenager in the India A setup.
Agarkar said: “We picked him for the India A team because he is young and immensely promising. The idea is to give these youngsters exposure. Yashasvi Jaiswal is already part of the ODI set-up as well. As impressive as Sooryavanshi has been, there are others who have performed strongly too. We are very excited about him and hopefully he can showcase his talent when he travels with the A team.”
For now, the next stage of Sooryavanshi’s journey appears set to come through India A and potentially the Asian Games setup, but his inclusion in the probables list and the growing support from senior figures suggest his progress is being closely monitored at the highest levels of Indian cricket.
