A heartbreaking end to a local cricket match

A local cricket match in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad district turned tragic on Sunday when veteran bowler Ahmer Khan collapsed on the field shortly after bowling the final delivery of a match at the Bilari Sugar Mill Ground.

According to reports in Indian media, the fixture was part of a tournament organized by the Uttar Pradesh Veterans Cricket Association, featuring teams from Moradabad and Sambhal. The contest had come down to the final over, with Sambhal requiring 14 runs from the last four balls. Khan, representing Moradabad, bowled a decisive spell that restricted the opposition to 11 runs, handing his team a narrow victory.

Joy turns to shock on the field

Moments after releasing the match-winning delivery, witnesses said Khan appeared to struggle with his breathing before sitting down on the pitch and collapsing. Teammates and a doctor present at the venue immediately rushed to his aid and began CPR. Though brief signs of response were seen, he was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Video footage from the ground reportedly captured the sudden collapse, shocking the crowd and halting what had moments earlier been a celebration of victory. Medical reports later confirmed that Khan suffered a heart attack while on the field.

Tributes pour in for Ahmer Khan

Khan, a well-known figure in the Moradabad cricket circuit, had played in veterans’ tournaments for several years and was admired for his discipline and commitment to the sport. His death has left the local cricket community in deep mourning.

“We have lost not just a player, but a beloved member of our cricketing family,” one tournament organiser said, as quoted by India Today. “His contributions to veterans cricket will not be forgotten.”

Family and community in mourning

Local reports said the tragedy was witnessed by Samajwadi Party MLA Haji Mohammad Fahim Irfan, who was present at the ground as a guest. Khan, a resident of Ekta Vihar in Moradabad, is survived by his wife, two children, a brother, and a sister.

The veteran cricketer’s passing has sent waves of grief through the regional sporting community, underscoring the fragile balance between passion for the game and the physical toll it can take on aging athletes.
