PSL enters new era with Wasim Akram at the forefront

The Pakistan Super League is poised for its biggest transformation since inception, with two new franchises set to be added ahead of the 2026 edition — and Wasim Akram taking center stage in a dual role that combines symbolism with strategic influence.

As part of its expansion plans, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed Akram as the official brand ambassador for PSL 11. In a move that reinforces the tournament’s commercial push and public credibility, Akram will also serve as the auctioneer for the highly anticipated franchise bidding set to take place on January 8, 2026, at the Jinnah Convention Centre in Islamabad.

Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi described the former captain as a perfect fit for the league’s evolving identity. “Nothing strengthens the PSL brand more than Wasim Akram,” he said.

Naqvi confirmed that Akram will formally take charge as ambassador from January 1 and will be involved directly in the league’s next milestone moment. “He will officially assume the role of brand ambassador from January 1 and will also play an active role in overseeing the franchise auction process, which will feature an international auctioneer,” Naqvi said during the same media briefing.

Franchising milestone: Ten bidders shortlisted for new teams

The January 8 auction will see 10 shortlisted bidders, selected through a rigorous technical screening, compete to acquire ownership of the two new teams. A total of 12 proposals had been submitted by groups representing five continents, reflecting the growing global interest in PSL’s commercial ecosystem.

In a statement, the Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed the next phase of the auction process. “These shortlisted bidders will now move to the financial bidding stage,” the board stated. The successful bidders will also have the right to select franchise names from a shortlist of six cities: Rawalpindi, Hyderabad, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Gilgit, and Muzaffarabad.

This addition of two franchises will increase the league’s size from six to eight teams for the first time — a significant step in its evolution since the league launched with five teams in 2016 and expanded to six in 2018.

Multan Sultans update and auction timeline

The Multan Sultans, whose previous ownership structure has concluded, will be operated by the PCB for PSL 11 and will be re-auctioned after the season. Former owner Ali Tareen has been cleared to bid for a new team and could return to the league in a different capacity, pending the results of the upcoming auction.

In terms of scheduling, the PCB is considering an earlier start to PSL 11, potentially moving the opening fixture from March 26 to March 23. Naqvi indicated that the decision would be made after consultations with existing franchises.

PSL 11 auction becomes a symbol of the league’s global ambitions

Beyond the technicalities of team ownership and bidding, the presence of Wasim Akram at the center of PSL’s most significant expansion phase sends a clear signal: Pakistan’s premier T20 league is not only scaling up in size, but also elevating its stature.

Akram’s involvement as brand ambassador and auctioneer positions him as both a face of the league and a facilitator of its future — bridging the PSL’s celebrated past with its fast-unfolding next chapter.
