Cricket West Indies (CWI) has convened an emergency two-day summit in Trinidad (August 10–11, 2025) to address performance challenges and implement structural reforms aimed at closing the elite-level gap in West Indies cricket. The meeting brings together legendary players, current stars, coaches, and administrators in a rare high-stakes intervention.
High-profile cricket legends at the table
Requested by CWI President Dr Kishore Shallow, the Cricket Strategy & Officiating Committee met at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad with a distinguished roster of attendees. Committee members include Dr Desmond Haynes, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, and Ian Bradshaw, joined by special invitees Sir Clive Lloyd and Sir Vivian Richards. Senior men’s players, head coach Daren Sammy, and key administrators also participated in the discussions.
Immediate reforms and unified vision
Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe described the gathering as a “critical turning point” for West Indies cricket. The first day focused on High Performance Strategy and Structural Reform, with panel discussions identifying urgent performance issues and strategies for immediate improvement. The second day shifted to Player-Centered High-Performance Solutions, with candid input from players and coaches on team ambitions, performance gaps, and the brand of cricket the team aims to play.
“What we hope will emerge is a unified vision and a clearly defined, comprehensive framework designed to correct systemic inadequacies and close the performance gap at the elite level,” Bascombe said. “This is not about quick fixes but identifying the structural reforms necessary across our development and high-performance systems.”
CWI leadership signals no more ‘business as usual’
CWI CEO Chris Dehring emphasised that the summit was not just a reaction, but a necessary intervention. “The performance of our senior men’s team has raised legitimate concerns among our fans, stakeholders and partners and we could not afford to continue with business as usual,” he said.
Dehring added that administrators are committed to supporting reforms with “the necessary resources, infrastructure and leadership” to ensure sustainable improvement.
Implementation and public accountability
Outcomes from the summit will be implemented immediately, with progress updates promised as part of both short- and long-term strategic reform. A press briefing will be held on Monday, August 11, at 3 PM local time at the Hyatt Meeting Room, streamed live on the Windies Cricket YouTube Channel. The panel will feature CEO Chris Dehring, Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe, Sir Clive Lloyd, and Committee Chair Enoch Lewis, with a Q&A session for both in-person and online audiences.
