Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced significant leadership changes across formats as the team embarks on a new chapter. These transitions come ahead of a crucial home season, which includes the start of the new ICC World Test Championship cycle with a home series against Australia and a tour to England and Ireland for T20Is in preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

Kraigg Brathwaite Steps Down as Test Captain

West Indies Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite has officially stepped down from his role, a decision he had conveyed to CWI leadership earlier this year before the team’s historic series-levelling win in Pakistan. Brathwaite’s resignation comes ahead of the home series against Australia, allowing the new leadership ample time for transition. He will now focus on his batting as he nears the milestone of 100 Test matches.

Brathwaite’s tenure, which began in 2021, was marked by several historic achievements, including West Indies’ first Test victory in Australia in 27 years, an iconic win in Brisbane in 2024. Under his leadership, the team also secured a rare Test win in Pakistan, their first since 1990, and a home series triumph over England in 2022. CWI has expressed deep gratitude for Brathwaite’s leadership, acknowledging his discipline and resilience in guiding the Test squad to key milestones. His successor will be announced soon.

Shai Hope Takes Over as T20I Captain

In another major shift, Shai Hope has been appointed as West Indies’ T20I captain, adding to his existing role as ODI skipper. He replaces Rovman Powell, who had led the T20 side since May 2023 and played a pivotal role in the team’s resurgence in the shortest format.

Under Powell’s captaincy, West Indies clinched series victories against India, England, and South Africa at home and reached the Super 8 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. His leadership also saw the team climb from ninth to fifth in the ICC T20I rankings. CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe praised Powell’s contributions, stating, “He ought to feel dignified by his contributions to West Indies cricket, as he has played a crucial role in elevating our T20 team to new heights. His leadership has left a strong foundation.”

Powell is expected to continue playing a key role as one of the team’s premier T20 batsmen. However, the decision to replace him has drawn criticism from former all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, who voiced his displeasure on social media, calling it an “injustice toward players.”

Regarding these leadership changes, CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe commented:

“Kraigg Brathwaite has been an outstanding leader for our Test team, guiding the squad with discipline, resilience, and a deep understanding of the game. His contributions have been invaluable, and under his leadership, we have witnessed historic moments that will be remembered for years to come. We thank Kraigg for his service as captain and look forward to his continued impact as a senior player. In terms of our white-ball leadership, after receiving the advice of Head Coach Daren Sammy on the intention to transition to Shai Hope, we spoke to Rovman Powell, who received the decision with professionalism and grace. I have expressed to him that he ought to feel dignified by his contributions to West Indies cricket, as he has played a crucial role in elevating our T20 team to new heights. His leadership has left a strong foundation, and we are grateful for his efforts.”

Coach Daren Sammy Backs Leadership Transition

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has strongly endorsed Hope’s appointment, describing it as a “progressive shift for West Indies cricket.” He emphasized Hope’s success in ODI cricket over the last 18 months and his ability to blend instinctive decision-making with analytical precision. “Shai Hope’s appointment signals a progressive shift for West Indies cricket, given his success with the 50 over team in the last 18 months. As the team continues its evolution, Hope blends instinctive decision-making with analytical precision, using in-depth match data and player performance insights to shape strategy. Shai is a strong believer in team performances, and his meticulous preparation, coupled with his calm and composed demeanor under pressure, makes him an ideal leader at this stage,” Sammy said.

Hope will begin his tenure as T20I captain with West Indies’ tour of England and Ireland in June, featuring three T20Is against each team. CWI believes these leadership transitions will provide stability and direction, ensuring the team’s continued upward trajectory across all formats.

Brathwaite and Powell’s Leadership Records

According to ESPNcricinfo, Brathwaite captained West Indies in 39 Tests, securing 10 wins, 22 defeats, and seven draws. During his tenure, he amassed 2,348 runs at an average of 31.72, including four centuries. Powell, on the other hand, guided the T20I team to a remarkable resurgence, culminating in their Super 8 finish at the T20 World Cup and an improved ICC ranking.

As West Indies cricket moves forward under new leadership, the changes mark a crucial step in the team’s evolution, with a focus on strengthening their competitive edge on the international stage.
