ICC targets early 2026 window

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is moving closer to finalizing the schedule for the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, with the tournament likely to be staged from February 7 to March 8. The event will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, continuing the 20-team format introduced in 2024.

According to ESPNcricinfo, while the ICC is still finalizing the full schedule, it has already identified the February–March window and informed the participating countries.

Venues and final decision

Matches are expected to be spread across at least five venues in India and two in Sri Lanka. A key decision still pending is the choice of venue for the final. Ahmedabad — which staged the 2023 ODI World Cup final — and Colombo are the frontrunners. The decision could hinge on Pakistan’s progress in the tournament, with a Sri Lankan venue favored if the team reaches the final, given ongoing political tensions preventing India and Pakistan from playing in each other’s countries.

Tournament format and qualification

The structure will replicate the successful 2024 edition co-hosted by the USA and West Indies. The 20 teams will be divided into four groups of five, with the top two from each progressing to the Super Eight stage. From there, the top two sides in each group will qualify for the semi-finals, followed by the final. In total, 55 matches will be played over the month-long competition.

So far, 15 teams have secured qualification: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, West Indies, USA, Ireland, Netherlands, Canada, and Italy. Italy’s inclusion marks a historic milestone, as it will be their first-ever senior ICC World Cup appearance. The five remaining slots will be filled through regional qualifiers, with two from Africa and three from Asia and East Asia-Pacific.

Packed cricket calendar in early 2026

The World Cup is part of a crowded calendar for Indian cricket in early 2026. The Women’s Premier League (WPL) is expected to take place in January, followed by the men’s T20 World Cup in February–March, and then the Indian Premier League (IPL) from mid-March to May. In addition, India are scheduled to host New Zealand for limited-overs series between January 11 and 31.

Looking ahead

The 2026 edition promises to continue cricket’s global expansion, bringing together established powers and emerging nations on one stage. With Italy debuting, Pakistan potentially playing their knockout matches in Sri Lanka, and a record 55 games lined up, the event is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious T20 World Cups to date.
