MCA honors Shah
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) hosted a felicitation ceremony for ICC chairman Jay Shah at a gala dinner in Mumbai on Saturday, September 27. The event, held just a day before the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Annual General Meeting on September 28, highlighted Shah’s influence on both domestic and international cricket over the past decade.
Leadership and reforms
According to the MCA, Shah has overseen major changes in cricket’s structure during his tenure, from strengthening India’s domestic competitions to enhancing the Indian Premier League’s global footprint. His reforms have also extended to women’s cricket, where prize money for tournaments has been significantly increased, bringing greater recognition and parity for women athletes. These measures have helped expand opportunities for women players while inspiring a new generation of talent.
Women’s cricket at the forefront
MCA officials said one of the most visible outcomes of Shah’s leadership will be on display when India hosts the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, beginning September 30. The tournament is expected to be the largest edition to date, featuring expanded participation from around the world, record-breaking broadcast coverage, and the biggest prize pool in women’s cricket history.
Stakeholder reactions
MCA president Ajinkya Naik praised Shah’s contributions during the ceremony, saying:
“Mr. Jay Shah’s commitment to empowering cricket at every level has been extraordinary. His reforms, especially for women’s cricket, have created opportunities and inspired millions worldwide. As we step into the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, it is only fitting that we celebrate his leadership and vision that continue to transform the game.”
What’s next
According to the MCA, the approaching ICC Women’s World Cup will serve as a key milestone, underlining the growth of women’s cricket under Jay Shah’s tenure, and reinforcing India’s position as a central driver of the sport’s global development.
