Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz is under investigation after returning a positive test for a recreational drug, placing him into an anti-doping process overseen by the sport’s global governing body, according to an exclusive report by ESPNcricinfo’s Matt Roller. The case is linked to a sample taken during the T20 World Cup earlier this year, connecting the development directly to his most recent international appearances.
ICC process underway following notification
The matter is being handled under the anti-doping system administered by the International Cricket Council, which will determine the outcome of the case. A Pakistan Cricket Board spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo, “The International Cricket Council (ICC) has informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) about this matter, and PCB has begun the due process. The results of this process will be communicated to the ICC today.” Nawaz is expected to respond as part of the ongoing proceedings.
Surrey deal collapses after positive test
According to ESPNcricinfo, Nawaz’s planned move to Surrey for the T20 Blast will no longer proceed. He had been set to feature across the full tournament schedule from late May to mid-July, with formal clearance granted by the Pakistan Cricket Board before the development emerged. Surrey has not issued a public comment on the situation.
World Cup campaign context
Nawaz featured in all seven matches of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign, which ended at the Super Eight stage. He scored 15 runs during the tournament and took seven wickets across those appearances.
Continues PSL participation during proceedings
Nawaz remains active in the Pakistan Super League with Multan Sultans during the ongoing season. He most recently bowled three overs without taking a wicket in a win over Rawalpindi in Karachi, and continues to be selected as the case progresses.
The proceedings remain ongoing, with the final outcome dependent on the completion of the ICC’s anti-doping process and the player’s response.
