India’s focus has already shifted toward the next major challenge in the 50-over format, with planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup gathering momentum well over a year before the tournament enters its final build-up phase. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, speaking in an interaction with IANS in Guwahati, said the board has begun implementing a long-term strategy that will guide squad development, player assessment and match preparation ahead of cricket’s next global 50-over showpiece.

The tournament, scheduled to be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia between October and November 2027, will mark the return of the ODI World Cup to the African continent for the first time since 2003. For India, it represents another opportunity to pursue a title they last won under MS Dhoni in 2011 and came close to reclaiming after reaching the final of the 2023 edition.

Structured planning already underway

With India entering a new World Cup cycle under Captain Shubman Gill, the emphasis has turned toward building continuity and identifying the combinations that can succeed in overseas conditions.

Outlining the board’s approach, Saikia said: “The BCCI is planning a clear path leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup. We will have enough ODI matches between now and the start of the tournament in October 2027. We have announced the team for the three ODI matches in England, scheduled from 14th to 19th July.”

The upcoming three-match ODI series in England is expected to provide an early opportunity for the team management to assess players and combinations as preparations accelerate. The recently announced 15-member squad includes the return of Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, while Harshit Rana has retained his place following recent opportunities at international level.

Selectors and team management working together

A key part of the planning process involves close coordination between Head Coach Gautam Gambhir, the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar and the wider support staff.

Addressing that alignment, Saikia added: “The selectors are on board with the support staff and the head coach.”

The collaborative approach is designed to ensure that player identification, workload management and squad construction remain aligned throughout the qualification and preparation period leading into the tournament.

Building toward the next World Cup cycle

India’s preparations begin from a position of strength following a 3-0 ODI series sweep over Afghanistan, where several players were given opportunities as the team continued to evaluate depth across multiple positions.

The transition into a new cycle also comes with important long-term decisions around squad composition, leadership development and the balance between experienced players and emerging talent. Recent squad selections have already highlighted the competition for places, with players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prince Yadav and Harsh Dubey missing out on the England ODI squad despite featuring against Afghanistan.

With more than a year remaining before World Cup preparations move into their final phase, the focus appears to be on creating a consistent pathway rather than relying on short-term experimentation. The combination of scheduled ODI cricket, coordinated planning between selectors and coaching staff, and a clearly defined roadmap gives India an extended window to shape the squad that will target success at the 2027 ODI World Cup.
