Delhi Capitals are preparing for a significant shift in their cricket leadership structure ahead of IPL 2027, with Yuvraj Singh expected to join the franchise’s support staff as Sourav Ganguly takes a leading role in the next phase of the team’s sporting operations. According to an exclusive report by the Times of India, the former India teammates are set to become central figures in the franchise setup when JSW resumes control of the men’s team, signalling the start of a wider strategic reset for a side still searching for its first IPL title.
For Yuvraj, the move would represent a notable transition from informal player mentorship into a formal franchise coaching environment. Since retiring from professional cricket, he has developed a reputation as one of the most influential mentors in Indian cricket, working closely with a number of established and emerging players across formats.
Among those linked to his guidance in recent years are Abhishek Sharma, Prabhsimran Singh, Abdul Samad, Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant. His work with younger cricketers has increasingly attracted attention across the IPL ecosystem, with several franchises monitoring the impact he has had on player development outside a traditional coaching structure.
A well-placed source told the Times of India: “Who wouldn’t want a Yuvraj Singh in the dugout? Many of his former teammates, including Ashish Nehra, Zaheer Khan and Virender Sehwag, have had coaching stints in the IPL. Yuvraj may be a little late to the party, but he has spent considerable time working with youngsters and understanding the demands of the role.”
The expected appointment would bring one of India’s most decorated white-ball cricketers into an official IPL coaching setup for the first time. Yuvraj remains one of only a handful of players to have played pivotal roles in multiple ICC tournament victories, having been named Player of the Tournament during both the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 Cricket World Cup campaigns.
The same source highlighted the nature of his involvement with players, stating: “He doesn’t just train players; he mentors them. It’s not limited to phone calls or virtual sessions. He spends hours on the ground, often standing behind the nets and working under the sun alongside his players. It’s a genuinely hands-on approach that has benefited numerous cricketers.”
Ganguly expected to shape new cricket structure
Yuvraj’s anticipated arrival appears set to form part of a broader leadership transition as Delhi Capitals move into a new operational cycle under the franchise’s ownership arrangement between GMR Group and JSW Group.
Ganguly is expected to lead the franchise’s cricket operations within a senior leadership structure, adding another chapter to a relationship with the franchise that stretches back several years. He previously served as Delhi Capitals mentor during the 2019 IPL season before leaving the role following his appointment as BCCI President, and has since remained involved across the wider Capitals network, including with the Women’s Premier League side and Pretoria Capitals in SA20.
The expected leadership structure was further clarified by an IPL source who told PTI: “Sourav Ganguly will take over as Director of Cricket and Yuvraj will join as the batting coach.”
The two former India stars share a long cricketing history, with Ganguly playing a major role in Yuvraj’s early international career. Their reunion within the Delhi Capitals setup would place two of Indian cricket’s most recognisable figures at the centre of the franchise’s sporting decision-making.
Coaching changes expected across the franchise
The leadership changes are also expected to trigger a wider overhaul behind the scenes as Delhi Capitals prepare for the next management cycle.
The same IPL source added: “There will be complete overhaul of coaching staff in Delhi Capitals as JSW will be running the management for the 2027-28 seasons as per agreement. The trio comprising Venugopal Rao, Hemang Badani and Munaf Patel, who were appointed by co-owners GMR, will make way for new support staff.”
Delhi Capitals finished sixth in IPL 2026 and have missed the playoffs in each of the past two seasons. Despite assembling several competitive squads over the years, the franchise has yet to secure its first IPL championship, with its best performance remaining the run to the final in 2020.
Additional changes could follow before IPL 2027
According to ESPNcricinfo, Ganguly could ultimately serve as head coach within the new structure and that members of the current coaching group are unlikely to continue once the next operational cycle begins. The report also noted that Pant, who is expected to return to Delhi Capitals from Lucknow Super Giants through a trade arrangement, had previously trained with Yuvraj and had been involved in discussions regarding coaching appointments before the IPL 2025 season.
Should Ganguly move into a coaching position, it would not be entirely unfamiliar territory. He was appointed Head Coach of Pretoria Capitals for the 2026 SA20 season, his first formal coaching assignment, and guided the franchise to the tournament final, where they finished as runners-up.
Taken together, the developments point to a substantial reorganisation of Delhi Capitals’ cricket operations. With a new leadership framework taking shape and Yuvraj potentially stepping into his first IPL coaching role, the franchise appears to be positioning itself for a fresh attempt to convert long-term potential into sustained success.
