The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recently undertaken a significant reshuffle in the Indian cricket team’s coaching staff. Assistant coach Abhishek Nayar and fielding coach T Dilip have been relieved of their duties. This decision follows India’s underwhelming performances in recent Test series against New Zealand and Australia, where the team managed only one win in eight matches. These results led to India losing their top spot in the World Test Championship standings and failing to qualify for the final.

According to NDTV, sources within the BCCI suggest that Nayar’s dismissal may not be solely performance-based. A BCCI official stated, “While India’s recent Test debacles (against New Zealand and Australia) has led to the churning but there is also a feeling in the BCCI that Nayar became a scapegoat in the turf war between an important member of the support staff and a senior star player.”

In addition to Nayar and Dilip, strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai has also been replaced, in line with the BCCI’s new Standard Operating Procedure, which limits support staff tenures to three years. Adrian Le Roux, who previously served with the Indian team during the 2003 World Cup, is set to return as the new strength and conditioning coach.

When approached for comments on these developments, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia responded, “Certain things are being finalised. You will receive a press note from BCCI in some days.”

Following his departure from the national team setup, Abhishek Nayar has rejoined the Kolkata Knight Riders as part of their support staff for the ongoing IPL season.

These changes reflect the BCCI’s efforts to address both performance issues and internal dynamics within the coaching staff, aiming to enhance the team’s future prospects.
