Afghanistan’s T20 leadership could be heading for a significant shift.

According to a report by AMU TV, the Afghanistan Cricket Board is expected to remove Rashid Khan as T20I captain following the team’s early exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with Ibrahim Zadran emerging as the likely successor in the shortest format.

The report stated that the move is linked to “personal issues”, although no official confirmation has been issued by the board. It also suggested that the leadership question had been discussed internally even before the World Cup, but no change was implemented at that stage.

Leadership uncertainty after tournament setback

Afghanistan’s campaign failed to gather momentum in the tournament, with defeats against South Africa and New Zealand proving costly. Since the 2024 T20 World Cup, the side has endured inconsistent results, including an early exit from the 2025 Asia Cup and a modest win-loss record in T20Is.

Rashid, appointed T20I captain in 2019 and later reinstated after stepping down ahead of the 2021 World Cup, remains one of Afghanistan’s most influential figures. He crossed the landmark of 700 T20 wickets during the tournament and has taken 193 wickets in T20 internationals. Across 48 T20Is as captain, he has overseen 26 wins and 21 defeats.

Yet the board’s broader reset appears to extend beyond on-field results.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, ACB Chief Executive Naseeb Khan acknowledged that internal evaluations are underway. “If you are building a team for the future, changes are inevitable. We have already changed the head coach, batting coach, and trainer, and similar adjustments will also be made within the team,” he said, underlining that structural shifts are already in motion.

He further confirmed that the review is active, telling Cricbuzz, “We are currently considering reforms within the team,” signalling that leadership is part of a wider reassessment rather than an isolated decision.

However, he stopped short of confirming any immediate change at the top. “However, no final decision has been made regarding the captains yet, so I cannot say at this stage whether they will be changed or retained.”

Management reshuffle and future planning

The leadership debate unfolds against the backdrop of sweeping management changes. Toby Radford was brought in as batting coach ahead of the World Cup, while Richard Pybus replaced long-serving head coach Jonathan Trott following the team’s exit.

Naseeb indicated that Pybus’ role will soon expand beyond immediate assignments. “After the Sri Lanka series, he (Pybus) will come to Afghanistan. We are planning to introduce a new management team for the HPC,” he said, referring to restructuring plans at the High Performance Centre.

The board’s vision stretches well beyond the next series. “We want to start preparations from now for the 2027 and 2028 World Cups, and also bring Afghanistan’s domestic talent to the international stage,” Naseeb added, framing the potential captaincy rethink as part of a longer strategic cycle.

Ibrahim Zadran in the frame

AMU TV’s report identified Ibrahim Zadran as the frontrunner to assume T20 leadership should the change materialise. Zadran was Afghanistan’s top scorer at the 2026 T20 World Cup, amassing 170 runs in four matches at a strike rate above 140, including an unbeaten 95 against Canada.

While the board has not publicly confirmed any transition, the timing suggests a desire to reset leadership ahead of upcoming assignments, including the multi-format white-ball series against Sri Lanka in the UAE.

For now, Rashid remains captain. But with reforms underway and long-term planning prioritised, Afghanistan cricket appears poised for a pivotal decision that could redefine its leadership structure in the T20 format.
