Bihar turns to teenage prodigy for leadership
In a significant move ahead of the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been named vice-captain of the Bihar cricket team for their first two matches. According to multiple reports, Suryavanshi will act as deputy to captain Sakibul Gani as Bihar prepares to open its Plate League campaign against Arunachal Pradesh in Patna on October 15, followed by a clash against Manipur in Naidad.
This decision comes after a turbulent 2024-25 season in which Bihar failed to register a single win, collecting just one point across seven matches and suffering six outright losses. As a result, the team was relegated to the Plate division. With pressure mounting on the Bihar Cricket Association (BCA), the leadership duo of Gani and Suryavanshi marks a bold attempt to rejuvenate a struggling outfit.
A record-breaking journey at just 14
Suryavanshi, who hails from Samastipur, has already made history on multiple fronts. He made his Ranji debut for Bihar at just 12 years and 284 days, becoming the youngest player in the tournament’s history. He later went on to represent India U-19 in away series against England and Australia, where his performances turned heads.
In the 2023-24 season, he scored a blistering Youth ODI century in just 52 balls, breaking the previous world record held by Pakistan’s Kamran Ghulam. He also set a new Indian youth record by smashing ten sixes in a single innings. At 13 years and 188 days, he became the youngest centurion in competitive cricket history, and his 58-ball century against Australia in a youth Test is the second-fastest ever at that level.
IPL success and rapid rise
Suryavanshi’s big breakthrough came when he was picked by Rajasthan Royals in the 2025 IPL mega auction for INR 1.1 crore (approx. US$124K). He debuted in the tournament at just 14 and quickly made headlines by scoring a century in only 35 balls, becoming the youngest centurion in IPL history and recording the league’s second-fastest hundred.
In that IPL season, he tallied 252 runs from seven matches at a staggering strike rate of 206.55. His aggressive stroke play and fearless approach have earned him comparisons to some of India’s finest finishers, despite his age and relatively short career.
A bold but risky bet for Bihar
While Suryavanshi’s first-class numbers are modest—100 runs from 10 innings in five matches—selectors believe his leadership potential and high-performance ceiling make him an ideal candidate for a guiding role. His appointment is not only seen as a leap of faith but also a strategic attempt by the BCA to rebuild trust and momentum following years of administrative turmoil.
However, concerns remain about his availability during the season, especially with the ICC Under-19 World Cup scheduled for early 2026. His commitments with the India U-19 team could limit his Ranji Trophy appearances.
Administrative uncertainties continue to shadow BCA
The Bihar Cricket Association has faced criticism for governance issues, from delayed payments and infrastructure gaps to internal infighting. Recently, the BCCI issued a directive urging the BCA to form a five-member selection committee “at the earliest,” after an ad hoc selector had to be appointed to complete the squad selection for the opening matches.
While the naming of a 14-year-old vice-captain underscores Bihar’s ambition to chart a new path, it also highlights the deep-rooted challenges that continue to plague cricket administration in the state.
