From Bihar to the IPL at 14, Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s debut sends shockwaves through cricket world

Must Read

At just 14 years and 23 days old, Vaibhav Suryavanshi made history as the youngest-ever player to debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL), representing the Rajasthan Royals. His remarkable journey from the village of Tajpur in Bihar to the grand stage of IPL 2025 is a testament to talent, determination, and familial sacrifice.

Vaibhav’s debut was nothing short of sensational. Stepping in as an impact substitute against the Lucknow Super Giants, he announced his arrival by hitting a six off his very first ball. His aggressive 34-run innings off 20 balls, including three sixes, contributed to an explosive 85-run opening partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal. Despite the Royals narrowly losing by two runs, Vaibhav’s performance left an indelible mark.

His father, Sanjeev Suryavanshi, played a pivotal role in nurturing his son’s cricketing dreams, even selling their farmland to support Vaibhav’s training. Reflecting on their journey, he shared, “Woh ab sirf humra bituwa nahi pura Bihar ka bituwa hai (He is not just my son now but entire Bihar’s son)…Not just investment, it’s big investment. Aapko kya bataye humne toh apna zameen tak bech diya. Abhi bhi halat pura sudhra nahi (I have sold my land. Financial issues are still there).”

Vaibhav’s rapid ascent in cricket includes a Ranji Trophy debut at 12 and a century for India U-19 against Australia. Addressing age-related concerns, his father affirmed, “When he was 8 and half years old he first appeared for BCCI bone test. He has already played India U-19. We don’t fear anyone. He can again undergo age test.”

The cricketing world took notice, with Google CEO Sundar Pichai expressing his amazement: “Woke up to watch an 8th grader play in the IPL!!!! What a debut!”

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s story is not just about breaking records but also about the unwavering support of a family and the emergence of young talent from India’s heartland.
