Telangana is advancing plans for a new international cricket stadium in Hyderabad that would exceed the capacity of Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, with the BCCI and state government working towards a joint development and management arrangement, according to the Deccan Chronicle.
The proposed venue is being planned for Bharat Future City on approximately 100 acres, with officials currently examining potential sites. Its intended capacity would exceed the 132,000-seat Narendra Modi Stadium, positioning the Hyderabad project to become India’s largest cricket venue if completed as envisaged.

BCCI and Telangana work on development model
Under the proposed arrangement, the Telangana government would allocate the land while the BCCI would cover the costs of building and maintaining the stadium. A framework for the two sides to jointly develop and manage the facility is being worked out.
The project has been conceived under Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s plans for Bharat Future City, with the foundation stone expected to be laid in December 2026. Cost estimates are still being finalised, although the construction expenditure is expected to surpass that of the Ahmedabad venue.
The proposed stadium is being envisioned along the lines of leading international cricket grounds, including Lord’s in England and prominent venues in Australia.
Hyderabad targets a larger international venue
The project would give Hyderabad a substantially larger cricket venue alongside the existing Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium at Uppal.
According to The New Indian Express, officials believe the Uppal stadium does not have sufficient capacity for major international occasions such as World Cup matches, contributing to the state government’s push for a new venue capable of meeting Hyderabad’s future requirements.
The proposed stadium is also intended to extend beyond cricket. Plans envisage the facility accommodating football and large-scale concerts, while the government is exploring its potential to stage major events and conventions.
Future City location offers major transport links
Bharat Future City’s planned transport infrastructure is another component of the stadium proposal. The site is expected to benefit from access to the Outer Ring Road and proposed Regional Ring Road, alongside a planned Metro Rail extension to Future City and proximity to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad.
The venue is also intended to form part of the broader Sports City, tourism and Net-Zero City plans for Bharat Future City, placing the stadium within a wider development strategy rather than treating it solely as a standalone cricket facility.
The state’s sporting plans for the area extend to infrastructure aimed at creating opportunities for young athletes. The Young India Physical Education and Sports University is already working with international universities and organisations as part of that broader objective.
With the site, cost estimates and BCCI partnership framework still being worked through, the proposed December 2026 foundation-stone ceremony represents the next major milestone for the Hyderabad stadium project.
