Justice Arun Mishra, a former Supreme Court judge, has been appointed as the Ombudsman and Ethics Officer for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). His dual-role appointment was confirmed on the BCCI website on Thursday.
Justice Mishra served on the Supreme Court from July 7, 2014, to September 2, 2020. After retiring, he became the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on June 2, 2021, holding the position until June 1, 2024.
Born on September 3, 1955, in Gwalior, he began his legal career in 1978, specializing in constitutional, civil, industrial, criminal, and service law at the Madhya Pradesh High Court. In 1998-99, he became the youngest Chairman of the Bar Council of India.
His judicial career started on October 25, 1999, when he was appointed as a judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. He later served as Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court (2010–2012) and the Calcutta High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court.
During his six-year tenure at the Supreme Court, Justice Mishra delivered 132 judgments, with significant contributions in property law, land acquisition, and constitutional matters, shaping Indian jurisprudence.
The position of BCCI Ombudsman and Ethics Officer has notable predecessors. Justice Ajit Prakash Shah, former Chief Justice of the Delhi and Madras High Courts, was the first appointee in 2015. He was succeeded by Justice D.K. Jain in 2019 and Justice Vineet Saran in 2022.
