India Set to Open Campaign Amid High Hopes
As anticipation builds for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, scheduled from September 30 to November 2, Team India is preparing to launch their campaign with a high-stakes opener against Sri Lanka at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. After narrowly missing out in the 2017 final, the Women in Blue are determined to go all the way this time.
Confidence in Preparation: BCCI Speaks Out
Speaking to ANI, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia expressed strong confidence in the team’s form and preparation ahead of the tournament:
“India is hosting the ICC Women’s World Cup from September 30 to November 2 in India as well as in Sri Lanka. The Indian team has been doing extremely well. If you look at the last series in England also, in the white ball cricket, they have performed very well and defeating England in England is not an easy thing, but they have handsomely defeated England both in the T20 as well as ODI matches. So far, the Indian team has not won any ICC Women’s Trophy. There is a big challenge for that this time around. The Indian team is fully prepared to take on this biggest challenge in the ICC World Cup.”
Guwahati Joins the Global Stage
For the first time in history, Guwahati will host matches in a senior ICC World Cup tournament. This milestone marks a new chapter for cricket in India’s Northeast region.
“Guwahati, for the first time, is hosting any World Cup matches. Prior to this, in 2023, when the Men’s 50 overs ICC World Cup was held in India, Guwahati hosted four warm-up matches, but not the main matches. It was good that the warm-up matches held here were very successful. Three matches were held. One match was lost out. The infrastructure has developed much better now. The whole northeastern region, the only international venue is Guwahati. The people here are really eagerly waiting for this tournament. On 30th, I hope, with the opening game, northeastern India, as well as Guwahati, will be on the map. We will get a position in the world map so far as ICC tournaments are concerned,” the BCCI secretary added.
Grand Opening Ceremony in Guwahati
Adding to the occasion, Guwahati will also host the World Cup’s grand opening ceremony. Indian playback singer Shreya Ghoshal is set to perform live, bringing energy and glamour to the event. Ghoshal, who has recorded the official anthem titled “Bring it Home”, will deliver a performance that celebrates the unity and spirit of women’s cricket.
Eyes on the Prize
With the ICC Women’s World Cup trophy still elusive, the Indian team enters the tournament with purpose and hunger. Strong performances in England have laid the groundwork for belief. And now, with home advantage, growing fanfare, and a landmark venue like Guwahati joining the action, India stands on the cusp of a defining moment in women’s cricket history.
