Selection calls stir debate as Gill left out of Asia Cup 2025 plans
India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad reveal is around the corner — but the biggest talking point is the player who may not feature at all. Despite his stature as Test captain and recent form in the longer format, Shubman Gill is not expected to be part of India’s 15-member squad for the T20 tournament in the UAE, with selectors reportedly opting for continuity over disruption.
According to a report in the Indian Express, Gill’s name did come up during internal discussions — with some within the team management informally suggesting dropping Tilak Varma to make room for the 25-year-old opener. But the idea was swiftly turned down.
The issue wasn’t just about performance — but also about roles, balance, and fairness to players currently in the setup.
Tilak’s form and Jaiswal’s position tilt scales against Gill
Gill’s path back into the T20I squad appears blocked not only by India’s current top-order strategy but also by the consistency of players already in the mix.
According to the report, there was little interest in breaking up the current top three — with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson viewed as the first-choice openers, and Yashasvi Jaiswal expected to serve as the third option. Tilak Varma, currently ranked world No. 2 in T20Is, has also earned backing from the selectors.
“If Gill is included, then he will straight away bat at the top, and if he doesn’t get a game then there is no point in having him. At the same time, it will be unfair to Sanju, who did well in the past. If Gill gets in then Sanju might have to miss out, and Jitesh might get a game,” a source told the Indian Express.
Gill hasn’t featured in a T20I since July 2024 against Sri Lanka. Since then, India have played series against Bangladesh, South Africa, and England without recalling him — a clear sign the team is moving in a different direction for the shortest format.
R Ashwin calls it a ‘tricky’ choice for selectors
India off-spinner R Ashwin added his voice to the debate, calling the situation “tricky” in his recent video on YouTube, especially with India expected to build on the squad structure used during the 2024 T20 World Cup.
“There are a few talking points regarding the Asia Cup. The first question that comes to everyone’s mind is whether Shubman Gill fits into the T20 plans because in the last World Cup, Yashasvi Jaiswal was the backup opener. So Jaiswal automatically gets a kick-in. Rohit Sharma is not going to be a part of that team, so Jaiswal automatically gets a look-in,” Ashwin said.
“Now, who is going to be that other opener? Shubman Gill had an outstanding series. Can he return to the squad? Sanju Samson has had a fabulous run as a T20 opener for India. So I think it is a tricky state for the selectors,” he added.
BCCI may avoid press spotlight amid selection scrutiny
Adding to the intrigue is uncertainty over how the BCCI plans to announce the Asia Cup squad. According to a Times of India report, the board is undecided on whether to hold a press conference. Some sources even suggest the squad list might be released directly online — avoiding media questions altogether.
The selection meeting, led by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, is expected to take place in Mumbai on August 19. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia will reportedly be involved in final discussions, with the official announcement to follow shortly after.
Suryakumar to lead, Bumrah fit as India eye title defense
While Gill’s absence is a headline, other developments provide more clarity on India’s roadmap for the Asia Cup. Suryakumar Yadav is expected to continue as T20 captain, having cleared a recent fitness test. Jasprit Bumrah, too, is back to full fitness after a strong showing in the recent Test series against England, where he claimed 14 wickets in three matches.
India will begin their title defense in Group A alongside Pakistan, UAE, and Oman. The much-anticipated clash with Pakistan is scheduled for September 14 in Dubai, with the tournament opener against UAE on September 10. The final will be played on September 28.
A clear message from selectors: no room for sentiment
The omission of Gill — despite his stature, fan following, and red-ball success — signals a clear intent from the selectors: T20 selection will be based on current roles and squad cohesion, not name value.
As the countdown to the Asia Cup continues, it’s not just the team combination that’s being watched — but how the BCCI handles the optics of the decision, especially if one of India’s most prominent names is left out of a major ICC event.
