Rishabh Pant, captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), has been fined for the second time in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season due to his team’s slow over-rate. Following an earlier penalty of ₹12 lakh for a similar offense against the Mumbai Indians, Pant now faces a ₹24 lakh fine after LSG failed to complete their overs on time in a subsequent match against the Chennai Super Kings. Additionally, other team members, including the impact substitute, have been fined ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever is less.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has updated its over-rate policy for IPL 2025. Under the new rules, a first offense results in a ₹12 lakh fine for the captain. A second offense increases the captain’s fine to ₹24 lakh, with additional penalties for other team members. Previously, repeated violations could lead to match suspensions, but the BCCI has now replaced suspensions with escalating fines to maintain team stability while enforcing discipline.
Pant’s on-field decisions have also come under scrutiny. Former cricketer Pragyan Ojha commented, “I feel he should have hit a few more shots to accelerate the scoring rate. He struggled a lot in the middle overs, and despite some big shots in the death overs, the team couldn’t reach a challenging total.”
As the IPL 2025 season progresses, the BCCI’s stringent enforcement of over-rate regulations underscores its commitment to maintaining the pace and fairness of the game.
