Stephen Fleming’s departure as Chennai Super Kings Head Coach has opened one of the most high-profile coaching vacancies in franchise cricket, with attention now shifting to who could succeed the New Zealander after nearly two decades at the helm.
The decision to part ways was reached mutually following discussions between Fleming and the franchise, bringing to a close one of the longest and most successful coach-team partnerships in Indian Premier League history. Having served as a player in the inaugural 2008 season before taking charge as Head Coach in 2009, Fleming helped transform CSK into one of world cricket’s most consistent franchise teams.
During his tenure, Chennai Super Kings won five IPL titles and two Champions League Twenty20 trophies, reached the IPL playoffs a record 12 times and appeared in 10 IPL finals. Fleming also oversaw the Joburg Super Kings in SA20 and Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket, guiding both franchises to regular playoff appearances.
End of an era for Chennai Super Kings
Paying tribute to Fleming’s contribution, Rupa Gurunath, Owner, Chennai Super Kings, said in an official statement:
“Stephen Fleming has been the heartbeat of our coaching unit for almost the entire journey of this franchise. For nearly two decades, he has helped shape our identity, vision, and pursuit of excellence.”
She added: “On behalf of everyone at the Super Kings franchise, we extend our deepest gratitude for his unwavering commitment, passion, and leadership. While our journey together on the field comes to a close, he will always remain an integral part of the team’s legacy.”
KS Viswanathan, Managing Director, Chennai Super Kings, also reflected on Fleming’s influence, saying in an official statement: “From the earliest days of this journey, Fleming helped define not just how we played, but what we wanted to be as a franchise. He built a culture rooted in consistency, humility, and putting the team first. His ability to understand people and bring out the best from individuals across the team has been one of his greatest strengths.”
He added: “His influence extends far beyond the boundary, and we are proud to have shared this remarkable journey together.”
Fleming also looked back on his time with the franchise, saying in an official statement: “Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude. My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career. I am proud of everything we have achieved.”
He added: “Together, we celebrated unforgettable victories, overcame difficult moments, and built memories that will stay with me forever. CSK will always be close to my heart, and I will be cheering the team on for years to come.”
Rahul Dravid brings proven pedigree
Among the names linked with the role, Rahul Dravid stands out because of both his coaching credentials and his long-standing association with India Cements, the parent company of Chennai Super Kings.
Having guided India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title and earned widespread recognition for developing young talent during his time with the national side and Under-19 programme, Dravid offers experience in building long-term success. Following his departure from Rajasthan Royals after the 2025 season, he is currently not attached to an IPL franchise.
Hemang Badani combines local knowledge with franchise success
Hemang Badani has also emerged as a strong contender following his recent coaching roles across franchise cricket. Although his spell with Delhi Capitals produced mixed IPL results, his record with Chepauk Super Gillies in the Tamil Nadu Premier League has been particularly impressive, delivering four titles.
The Chennai native has also been appointed Head Coach of Southern Brave in The Hundred, adding to his growing coaching résumé.
Overseas experience offers alternative options
If Chennai Super Kings opt for an overseas appointment, Adam Voges and Shane Watson both present compelling cases.
Voges has built one of the strongest coaching records in T20 cricket with Perth Scorchers, leading the franchise to multiple Big Bash League titles and maintaining one of the best win-loss records among coaches in recent seasons.
Watson, meanwhile, already understands the CSK environment after representing the franchise as a player. Since retiring, he has coached San Francisco Unicorns in Major League Cricket to multiple playoff appearances and helped Quetta Gladiators return to the Pakistan Super League playoffs. He is currently part of Kolkata Knight Riders’ coaching staff.
Familiar faces remain intriguing possibilities
Former CSK player Ravichandran Ashwin has also begun transitioning into coaching through his player-coach role with Dublin Guardians in the European T20 Premier League. His familiarity with the franchise and leadership experience make him an outside contender should CSK prioritise continuity.
Another name that continues to attract attention is MS Dhoni. While the legendary captain is yet to retire from playing, his deep connection with the franchise, leadership record and previous mentoring experience with India have prompted speculation that he could eventually move into a coaching role.
At this stage, however, Chennai Super Kings have not announced Stephen Fleming’s successor. While several experienced candidates have emerged as potential options, the franchise’s next appointment will determine who inherits one of the most successful coaching legacies in IPL history.
