The BCCI has narrowed its focus to former India internationals Parthiv Patel and Pragyan Ojha as potential successors to Ajit Agarkar as Chairman of the Senior Men’s Selection Committee, with Agarkar increasingly unlikely to receive a contract extension, according to a report by Sports NDTV.
Agarkar’s existing term expires early next month, bringing the leadership of one of Indian cricket’s most influential decision-making panels into focus ahead of the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting on Friday. An extension through next year’s ODI World Cup had previously been under consideration, but a section of the board now views his tenure as effectively complete.
Agarkar may have chaired final selection meeting
The potential leadership transition comes immediately after another significant round of squad decisions. Agarkar may have chaired his final selection meeting on Wednesday, when India’s squads for the upcoming home white-ball series against the West Indies were finalised.
The selection committee also chose the Rest of India squad for the Irani Trophy under Agarkar’s leadership. Any change at the top would therefore follow directly after the panel completed its latest set of senior and domestic selection responsibilities.
Agarkar was appointed Chairman of the Senior Men’s Selection Committee in July 2023. His period in charge has coincided with India winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy before successfully defending the T20 World Cup title earlier this year.
Parthiv Patel and Pragyan Ojha in contention
Parthiv and Ojha have emerged as the two names at the forefront of the BCCI’s consideration if Agarkar does not continue.
Former wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv captained Gujarat to domestic titles during his playing career and has subsequently gained IPL experience in coaching and scouting roles. Former India spinner Ojha, meanwhile, is already part of the current selection panel and has experience within the BCCI’s selection structure.
Both are three-time IPL winners and satisfy the eligibility requirements cited for the position, including having played at least seven Tests and having been retired from competitive cricket for a minimum of five years.
Rohit Sharma situation forms part of selection backdrop
The uncertainty surrounding Agarkar’s future has emerged alongside scrutiny over the selectors’ approach to Rohit Sharma as India build towards next year’s ODI World Cup.
The selection panel had indicated to Rohit that he was outside its plans for the tournament as India considered providing younger players with regular opportunities. The former India Captain, who has already retired from Tests and T20Is, was left to determine the direction of his ODI career.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia subsequently rejected suggestions that Rohit was being pushed towards retirement, maintaining that he would continue representing India while remaining part of the selectors’ plans. That intervention created differences with the selection panel after its position had already been communicated within the board and to Rohit.
Rohit was ultimately retained for the upcoming West Indies ODI series following a difficult start to India’s previous ODI assignment against England. After consecutive low scores, the 39-year-old responded with 138 in the final match of that series.
BCCI approaches decision on selection leadership
The possible departure of Agarkar would bring to an end a tenure spanning more than three years and covering a period of major tournament success for India.
Attention now turns to the BCCI’s upcoming administrative proceedings as Agarkar’s contract reaches its conclusion. With Parthiv and Ojha positioned as the two leading candidates, the board faces a decision over whether its next phase of ODI World Cup planning will also begin under new leadership of the Senior Men’s Selection Committee.
