Ajit Agarkar’s future as Chairman of India’s senior men’s selection committee remains uncertain after the panel completed its squad selection for the West Indies white-ball series, with his current BCCI contract due to run until October 4.
No member of the BCCI’s senior decision-making group had contacted Agarkar about his future as of the latest update, according to a report by PTI. With no discussions over an extension having taken place, the West Indies selection meeting could prove to have been his final major assignment as Chief Selector under his existing agreement.
Agarkar could send thank-you note to BCCI
Agarkar has reportedly indicated to people close to him that he is likely to email BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia following the West Indies selection, thanking the board for giving him the opportunity to serve in the role for three years.
There nevertheless remains time before his existing term expires on October 4, and the BCCI has not announced a final decision on whether he will continue beyond that date.
The Hindustan Times reported that Agarkar’s contract had initially expired in June before the BCCI extended it until October 4. The former India cricketer had sought a further extension that would take his tenure through to the conclusion of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
BCCI review meeting added to uncertainty
Agarkar was appointed Chairman of the senior men’s selection committee in July 2023, succeeding Chetan Sharma. His tenure has coincided with significant change across the Indian team, including a transition in Test cricket following the retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin.
India have also enjoyed considerable white-ball success during his time leading the selection panel, winning the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
Questions over Agarkar’s position intensified after he was absent from a BCCI review meeting in Mumbai on September 3. Head Coach Gautam Gambhir, Captain Shubman Gill, T20I Captain Shreyas Iyer and BCCI Centre of Excellence Head VVS Laxman were among those who attended.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Saikia said: “Today he was out of station. He could not be a part of the meeting because this meeting was called at a very short notice, and our head of the selection committee was not in town, so he could not join it. He was in such an area that he could not join online also, in spite of all these efforts.”
October deadline leaves Agarkar’s future unresolved
The selection committee’s latest assignment covered India’s squads for the West Indies white-ball series as well as the Rest of India squad for the Irani Cup.
The West Indies tour begins with the ODI series on September 27, with further matches scheduled for September 30 and October 3 before the T20I leg starts on October 6.
Agarkar’s existing contract therefore expires during the West Indies series. With the BCCI yet to announce whether his tenure will be extended, his continuation as Chairman of the selection committee beyond October 4 remains unresolved.
