The Calcutta High Court has directed the immediate arrest of Delhi Capitals and Bengal wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel in connection with an alleged rape case, while also ordering police to seize electronic devices linked to the accused as part of the ongoing investigation.
The case relates to an FIR registered earlier this year at Mogra Police Station under non-bailable provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including allegations of rape and criminal intimidation. The High Court’s order also concerns another accused named in the case.
The Calcutta High Court stated in its order: “It is disclosed in the communication dated 6th July, 2026, that one pen drive/storage device is seized from the petitioner….and it is believed that certain materials are stored therein… It appears that accused persons…are required to be apprehended for seizure of electronic devices lying with them so that data stored therein cannot be shared with others…”
The Court further stated: “Communication dated 6th July, 2026 discloses steps taken by the concerned police authorities for apprehending…[the accused] but fact remains…[they] are yet to be apprehended. Concerned police authorities are directed to continue with their endeavour to apprehend respondent nos.6 & 7 [accused] and to make seizure of devices so obnoxious data stored therein shall not be further disseminated.”
Complaint outlines allegations
According to the complaint, the woman alleged that she and Porel had been in a relationship for around three years before problems emerged, claiming the cricketer began “distancing” himself despite previously promising to marry her.
The complaint further alleges that Porel engaged in a sexual relationship with her on the promise of marriage and later subjected her to assault, criminal intimidation and other offences. It also alleges that she was unlawfully confined, deprived of food, isolated, and later required medical treatment following an incident in Delhi in April 2026. The complaint additionally claims she was threatened over the phone and through social media, including via accounts allegedly linked to an associate and a third-party mobile number.
Police investigation underway
“We have received a complaint and started an investigation,” a police official told PTI.
Police registered the case at Mogra Police Station and began investigating the allegations following the complaint lodged by the woman and her mother.
Porel denies allegations
Porel has denied the allegations against him.
“I am playing well now, so various things are coming up,” Porel told reporters.
He added: “I will talk about this when the police investigate. I have not spoken to the police yet.”
The 23-year-old has represented Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League since 2023 and has also featured for India A on tours of the United Kingdom and Australia. He made his first-class debut for Bengal during the 2021-22 season.
