Australia begins advance security check ahead of January T20Is
As Australia prepares to return to Pakistan for a three-match T20I series in January 2026, a delegation from Cricket Australia has arrived in Lahore to review security protocols and tour readiness. According to a report by GeoSuper, the group — which includes an independent security consultant and a representative from the Australian Cricketers’ Association — is conducting a multi-day assessment of venues, facilities, and accommodation.
This preparatory visit signals the seriousness with which Cricket Australia is approaching the tour, prioritizing player safety and logistical clarity ahead of what is expected to be a tightly scheduled series.
Gaddafi Stadium and hotel facilities under review
Among the key stops on the delegation’s itinerary are Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, the National Cricket Academy (NCA), and the Lahore City Cricket Association (LCCA) Ground — all under consideration for hosting matches. The team hotel is also being inspected to ensure compliance with international safety and comfort standards.
Officials from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), local government representatives, and members of Pakistan’s security agencies have been engaged in the process, briefing the visiting delegation and outlining the comprehensive arrangements in place.
The Pakistan leg of the tour is currently expected to begin in late January, serving as a preparatory series ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.
ODI series likely to be rescheduled after PSL
Australia’s trip to Pakistan is split into two phases: the January T20I series and a follow-up three-match ODI series originally listed in the Future Tours Programme for March 13–19, 2026. However, with the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 11 expected to take place around the same time, early indications suggest that the ODI leg could be postponed and rescheduled after the domestic T20 competition concludes.
While the PCB has yet to officially confirm dates and venues for either leg, all signs currently point toward Lahore hosting the full T20I phase.
Diplomatic and regional security concerns in focus
Discussions between Cricket Australia and Pakistani authorities have also included officials from the Australian High Commission, who recently met with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi — who also serves as Pakistan’s federal interior minister.
This meeting followed a tense moment during Sri Lanka’s recent white-ball tour of Pakistan, when several Sri Lankan players reportedly requested to return home after a suicide bombing in Islamabad. The Sri Lankan board later instructed the squad to remain in Pakistan and complete the series.
This backdrop has added a layer of diplomatic sensitivity to Cricket Australia’s pre-tour assessments, especially with Australia being one of the few top-tier sides to commit to full tours of Pakistan in recent years.
Australia’s return follows successful 2022 tour
The upcoming series marks Australia’s return to Pakistan for the first time since 2022, when they played a full all-format tour. On that occasion, Australia won both the Test and T20I series, while Pakistan claimed victory in the ODIs.
With heightened focus on security and sporting diplomacy, this tour once again places Pakistan’s hosting capabilities under the microscope — while providing Australia with critical match practice ahead of a global tournament.
