Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have bolstered their backroom team ahead of IPL 2026, appointing former England international James Foster as their new Fielding Coach.
The five-time IPL champions confirmed the move as they look to rebound from a disappointing 2025 campaign, where they finished bottom of the table with just four wins in 14 matches.
Foster joins a well-established coaching setup led by Head Coach Stephen Fleming, alongside Batting Coach Michael Hussey and Bowling Coach Eric Simons—further strengthening one of the league’s most experienced support staffs.
Announcing the appointment, the franchise said:
“Say Yellove to our fielding coach James Foster! Former England wicketkeeper and a coach with experience across teams worldwide, he now kicks off this new chapter with the Pride,” CSK wrote on X.

Foster’s franchise and international coaching pedigree
Foster arrives at CSK with a strong and diverse coaching résumé spanning both international and franchise cricket.
Since retiring from professional cricket in 2018, the former England wicketkeeper has built a reputation as a specialist coach, working across multiple elite environments. His experience includes roles with England and New Zealand setups, as well as extensive involvement in global T20 leagues.
Most recently, Foster led Desert Vipers to the ILT20 title, underlining his credentials as a high-performance coach. He has also been appointed Assistant Coach at Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred.
Notably, Foster brings prior IPL experience, having spent several seasons with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) between 2020 and 2023 as both Fielding Coach and Assistant Coach—giving him valuable insight into league dynamics and operational structures.
Working closely with Dhoni and CSK leadership group
At CSK, Foster is expected to play a key role in elevating the team’s fielding standards while also working closely with the franchise’s leadership core.
This includes direct collaboration with MS Dhoni, who returned to captaincy duties during the 2025 season, and newly signed wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, who arrives after a standout T20 World Cup campaign.
Foster’s background as a wicketkeeper could prove particularly valuable, with CSK likely to leverage his expertise in developing both glovework and overall defensive efficiency—areas that have become increasingly critical in T20 performance optimization.
IPL 2026 presents reset opportunity for CSK
The 2026 season represents a crucial reset moment for CSK, both competitively and strategically.
After underperforming last year, the franchise will open their campaign on March 30 against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati, followed by fixtures against Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Delhi Capitals in the opening phase.
With leadership continuity under Fleming and Dhoni—potentially in his final IPL season—CSK are clearly investing in marginal gains, with fielding improvements seen as a key lever for performance turnaround.
Strategic takeaway: fielding focus signals performance shift
Foster’s appointment reflects a broader trend across elite T20 franchises: increasing investment in specialist coaching roles to unlock incremental advantages.
For CSK, historically known for stability and experience, this move signals intent to modernize and sharpen execution—particularly in high-impact areas like fielding, where matches are often decided.
As IPL 2026 approaches, Foster’s integration into CSK’s system will be closely watched, especially given the franchise’s need to quickly reverse last season’s results and reassert itself among the league’s top contenders.
