Leadership under scrutiny after early setbacks
Cricket West Indies (CWI) Director Miles Bascombe has called for calm and perspective amid mounting scrutiny of head coach Daren Sammy, following a string of suboptimal results since Sammy took the reins as all-format coach.
Speaking during a press conference after a two-day emergency meeting convened to address urgent challenges in West Indies cricket, Bascombe made clear that Sammy‘s appointment was rooted in long-term strategy—not short-term results or financial expediency.
“The underlying reason in [hiring Sammy] was that we felt Daren had been able to articulate a clear plan, and we saw him do that in the white-ball format, and we pretty much wanted the same type of approach towards Test cricket,” Bascombe maintained.
The comments come after the West Indies were swept 3-0 in a Test series against Australia in July—Sammy’s first as head coach—culminating in an embarrassing 27-run second innings, the second-lowest total in Test history. That was followed by a 5-0 whitewash in the T20I series and a 2-1 series loss to Pakistan in Florida.
Signs of progress amid the growing pains
Despite the early results, Bascombe argued that early signs of improvement are already visible—particularly among the bowlers.
“He is still only one series into his tenure as all-format coach, and while the 27 might be the highlight or lowlight of that first series, we have to admit that we saw some substantial improvement in terms of our bowling unit,” Bascombe maintained.
He also pointed to individual performances that signaled potential for growth under Sammy’s leadership.
“We saw even a Brandon King, who is one of those players that some persons might have pigeonholed as a white-ball player, we saw that he was able to show that he was up for the challenge of Test cricket,” Bascombe maintained.
Bascombe stressed that success under Sammy will require time and structural support to unlock the team’s potential.
“As Daren goes on, as we start to put some of the strategic initiatives in place to help the team prepare and help the players to grow their potential, we expect that performances will be better,” he added.
No financial motive behind Sammy’s role
Addressing speculation that Sammy’s appointment as an all-format coach was a budget-driven decision, Bascombe pushed back strongly against the claim.
“I could definitely say that there is no real significant savings in terms of having Daren as an all-format coach because we would still need additional support for him,” Bascombe said.
“So we would still have to have camps, many times he would not be available himself because he would be on tour and so we would still need to bring in other support staff, which would come at a cost, so there was definitely no sort of financial consideration in terms of merging the roles,” Bascombe said.
Strategic patience or risky bet?
Bascombe’s comments reflect a leadership team at CWI attempting to steady the ship through a turbulent transition period. While the early signs have been far from encouraging on the scoreboard, the organization appears committed to giving Sammy the time—and resources—needed to implement his vision.
As fans and former players continue to voice their frustrations, the next several months could determine whether that patience pays off—or whether the pressure forces another shift in direction.
