Former Australia international David Boon is expected to join the International Cricket Council (ICC) Board following his appointment as Interim Cricket Australia Chair, according to a report by Cricbuzz.
Boon, who succeeded Mike Baird as Cricket Australia Chair on October 28, 2026, is expected to represent the organisation at the ICC Board meeting scheduled for later this month in Bali, Indonesia.
His anticipated arrival comes as the ICC undertakes a governance review and examines the relationship between international cricket and the expanding franchise league landscape.
Boon’s expected ICC Board role follows Cricket Australia leadership change
Boon joined the Cricket Australia Board in February 2025 before being appointed Interim Chair following Baird’s departure.
If he joins the ICC Board, Boon will become one of four former international cricketers involved in the governing body’s highest decision-making body.
The others are New Zealand’s Roger Twose, Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal and Namibia’s Rudie van Vuuren, bringing international playing experience from both Full and Associate Member nations.
ICC governance review puts franchise cricket in focus
The potential addition of another former international player comes during a period of organisational change at the ICC.
The governing body is reviewing its governance arrangements while also establishing a new Franchise Leagues Committee chaired by Tamim Iqbal.
The committee’s formation reflects the growing importance of franchise competitions within cricket’s wider commercial and administrative structure.
A source familiar with the ICC workings said, as quoted by Cricbuzz: “With the new Franchise Leagues Committee, chaired by Tamim, and a governance review under way, that experience is a practical asset when balancing imperatives of players, members and franchises – all key stakeholders in Cricket’s expanding ecosystem.”
The source added: “Each involves and is influenced by decisions that touch players directly: scheduling, playing conditions, workload and officiating standards. Boon has lived those trade-offs on the field and enforced them from the referee’s chair.”
David Boon’s career spans playing, selection and officiating
Boon represented Australia in 107 Tests and 181 One-Day Internationals between 1984 and 1996, establishing himself as a prominent member of the national side during a successful period in Australian cricket.
He was part of Australia’s squad that won the 1987 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Following his international retirement, Boon moved into team management and selection, serving as an Australian national selector from 2000 until 2011.
He subsequently spent approximately a decade as an ICC Match Referee, overseeing more than 400 international matches.
His administrative career also includes an extended association with Cricket Tasmania, where he served as a Director and later as Chair during a period spanning 2014 to 2025.
That combination of responsibilities has given Boon experience across several areas that intersect with cricket governance, from national-team selection and match regulations to organisational leadership.
His expected participation at the upcoming ICC Board meeting in Bali would mark the next stage of that administrative career, subject to confirmation of Cricket Australia’s representation.
