Delhi Capitals and Bengal wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel has been arrested in West Bengal following allegations of rape, assault, criminal intimidation and non-consensual recording made by a medical student with whom he had been in a relationship. Porel was taken into custody following an intervention by the Calcutta High Court and has been remanded to three days of police custody, according to a report by Sportstar.

The complaint stems from a relationship that the woman said began after she met Porel in 2023. She has alleged that their relationship involved discussions around marriage before deteriorating, eventually leading to a police complaint and subsequent proceedings before the High Court. The allegations against Porel have not been established in court.

Porel remanded to police custody

Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunwar Bhushan Singh told Sportstar: “On Monday (August 10, 2026) night, he was arrested from Emami City under Dum Dum police station in North 24 Parganas district based on the Calcutta High Court’s July 21 direction to take him in custody immediately and also to seize his electronic devices. He was also produced before the district session court on Tuesday and has been remanded for three-day police custody.”

The arrest moves the case into a new phase after the complainant approached Mogra Police Station in Hooghly district on June 23. The case includes allegations spanning sexual assault, physical abuse, confinement, intimidation and the handling of private recordings.

The woman, a medical student from Karnataka, has alleged that she and Porel had been together for more than three years and had discussed marriage. She has further alleged that their relationship deteriorated after she became aware of his involvement with other women.

Complaint details allegations in Hooghly and Delhi

The allegations concern incidents said to have taken place in both West Bengal and Delhi. The complainant has accused Porel of engaging in sexual relations with her after promising marriage and of recording intimate moments without her consent.

An Official of Mogra Police Station told Sportstar: “However, the accused, meanwhile, took her to his flat in Hooghly a few months ago when his parents were away and forcibly engaged in a conjugal relationship. The woman also alleged that he recorded their intimate moments without her consent. Later, in April, Mr Porel also confined her in an apartment in Delhi when she objected to his action and assaulted her severely. The victim was also admitted to the hospital after the abuse.”

The complaint also details an alleged incident in Delhi on April 2, 2026. The woman has claimed that she was prevented from leaving, deprived of food and left requiring medical treatment.

The FIR, as quoted by India Today, states: “Abishek Porel illegally confined the complainant. He denied her food and deliberately kept her isolated. As a result… the complainant became physically weak and was unable to walk properly. Despite having a flight… she was compelled to seek immediate medical attention due to the injuries sustained.”

The woman has additionally accused Porel of threatening her through calls, messages and social media, including communications allegedly made through a third-party number. She has also alleged that private material was used to intimidate her.

High Court orders arrest and seizure of devices

The case subsequently reached the Calcutta High Court, where the complainant sought Porel’s arrest. The court directed police to trace and take him into custody and also ordered the seizure of his electronic devices.

The intervention placed particular focus on preventing private material connected to the complainant from being circulated. As part of the investigation, electronic material linked to Porel has been seized, including pen drives and a laptop, with a pen drive also sent for forensic examination.

Police had previously made attempts to locate Porel during the investigation before he was ultimately arrested. His detention followed questioning, after which he underwent the mandatory medical examination before appearing in court.

Porel previously denied allegations

Porel had denied the accusations after the complaint was filed and before his arrest. He acknowledged having been in a relationship with the woman but disputed the allegations made against him.

Delhi Capitals Wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel told Anandabazar Patrika: “I will speak about this when the police investigate. I have still not spoken to the police.”

His comments were made at an earlier stage of the case, before the subsequent High Court intervention and his arrest.

Porel has represented Bengal in domestic cricket and Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. He joined Delhi Capitals in 2023 as a replacement for Rishabh Pant and was subsequently retained by the franchise, while he has also represented India A on overseas tours to the United Kingdom and Australia.

The case will now continue through the legal process following Porel’s arrest and remand to three days of police custody. The allegations contained in the complaint and FIR remain allegations and have not been established by a court.
