Richard Gould, Chief Executive Officer of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), has issued a formal statement following England’s 4–1 series defeat in the 2025–26 Ashes. The statement confirmed that a thorough post-tour review is already in progress and emphasized the ECB’s focus on rebuilding ahead of the 2027 Ashes.
ECB acknowledges disappointment after 4–1 series loss
“This Ashes tour began with significant hope and anticipation, and it is therefore deeply disappointing that we have been unable to fulfil our ambition of winning the Ashes in Australia,” Gould said.
While he noted England’s “moments of strong performance and resilience,” including their victory in the fourth Test at Melbourne, he admitted that inconsistency across conditions and key phases had cost the team. “Australia ultimately deserved to retain the Ashes,” he stated.
Comprehensive review of Ashes campaign underway
Gould confirmed that the ECB is conducting a detailed review of the Ashes campaign. “This will cover tour planning and preparation, individual performance and behaviours, and our ability to adapt and respond effectively as circumstances require,” he said.
“We are determined to improve quickly. Our focus is on regaining the Ashes in 2027.”
Focus shifts to T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka
With the Test tour now complete, England’s men’s team will travel to Sri Lanka to begin preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which begins in February.
“We will implement the necessary changes over the coming months,” Gould added, hinting that lessons from the Ashes will inform the team’s white-ball approach as well.
