Amid this ownership transition, one of the three new stakeholders is understood to have reached out directly to Gambhir with a proposal that would see him take on the roles of partner, mentor and CEO. The offer also includes a two-to-three per cent equity stake in the franchise, placing him at the heart of both cricketing and executive decision-making.
The structure of the proposal underscores Rajasthan’s ambition to combine cricket strategy with corporate oversight under a single high-profile figure, should the opportunity ever materialise.
BCCI conflict rules block immediate IPL return
Despite the scale of the approach, any potential move remains firmly theoretical for now.
Under the Supreme Court-backed Lodha Committee reforms, an individual cannot simultaneously hold a position with the Indian team and an IPL franchise due to conflict-of-interest regulations. As long as Gambhir continues as India head coach, he is ineligible to accept any formal role with a franchise.
His current contract with the Board of Control for Cricket in India runs through the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. Only after that tournament would a pathway to the IPL reopen, should both parties remain interested.
People close to Gambhir declined to comment publicly, but indicated that his focus remains on his responsibilities with the national side.

The reported interest is rooted in Gambhir’s recent franchise track record.
Since retiring from playing, he has built a reputation as a mentor capable of reshaping team identity and results. With Lucknow Super Giants, he guided the franchise to back-to-back playoff appearances in 2022 and 2023.
In 2024, he returned to Kolkata Knight Riders in a mentorship role and oversaw a title-winning campaign, delivering the franchise’s third IPL trophy. That success preceded his appointment as India head coach in July 2024, succeeding Rahul Dravid.
His blend of tactical clarity and uncompromising standards has enhanced his standing across the league, particularly among franchises seeking long-term structural resets.

While speculation intensifies around a possible IPL comeback in the future, Gambhir’s immediate focus is international cricket.
