Goa will host the IPL 2027 mini-auction in December 2026, with the BCCI selecting the Indian state as the venue following three consecutive editions of the player auction overseas.
The decision brings the event back to India for the first time since Kochi staged the auction ahead of the 2023 season.
BCCI confirms Goa for IPL 2027 auction
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia told ANI: “This year, after hosting the IPL auction in three foreign locations, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi last year, we are going to host it in Goa in the month of December.”
Dubai staged the auction ahead of IPL 2024, followed by the 2025 mega-auction in Jeddah and the 2026 event in Abu Dhabi.
Franchise logistics shaped return to India
As previously reported by cricexec, IPL franchises had raised operational and logistical concerns over sending sizeable delegations abroad for a smaller auction. Those concerns were considered by BCCI officials around the Abu Dhabi event, with teams subsequently receiving assurances that the next mini-auction would be staged in India.
Securing a suitable domestic location had presented its own challenge because the auction period overlaps with India’s busy wedding season, affecting the availability of the substantial hotel capacity required for franchise representatives and others involved in the event.
Goa has now been selected for the December auction, resolving the venue question as teams prepare for the 2027 IPL season.
IPL prepares for a mini-auction
Unlike the broader squad-building process associated with a mega-auction, the 2027 event will be a mini-auction, with franchises retaining most of their existing squads and a smaller pool of players expected to be sold.
Attention will now turn to the decisions franchises make on their existing playing groups ahead of the December auction, when they will have the opportunity to reshape their squads for IPL 2027.
