The BCCI has decided to stage the IPL 2027 player auction in India, ending a run of three consecutive editions held overseas and responding to concerns from franchises about the practical challenges involved in travelling abroad for a mini-auction.
The move emerged from the IPL Governing Council meeting held on September 15, according to a report by Cricbuzz journalist Vijay Tagore. While the auction will return to India, its host city has yet to be finalised.
Franchise concerns help drive India return
IPL teams had raised operational and logistical concerns about sending sizeable delegations overseas for a smaller auction. Their views were considered by BCCI officials around last year’s event in Abu Dhabi, with franchises subsequently receiving assurances that the next mini-auction would take place in India.
The shift reverses the IPL’s recent preference for international auction venues. Kochi staged the auction ahead of the 2023 season before the event moved to Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi for the following three editions.
The overseas option could return for the next mega auction, but the immediate focus is on finding an Indian city capable of meeting the requirements for the 2027 event.
Hotel availability will shape venue decision
Finding sufficient accommodation during India’s busy wedding season will be a central consideration when the BCCI selects the host city. The board requires more than 100 hotel rooms for roughly two nights to accommodate franchise representatives and others involved in the auction.
IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal told PTI: “Every year we try for this to happen in India, but we don’t get the venue given the heavy marriage season. So, we definitely want it to be here this year, given that it would be a smaller auction and hopefully we will get the venue.”
The availability of suitable five-star hotel capacity between October and December will therefore influence which city ultimately stages the event.
Impact Player decision remains pending
The Governing Council did not settle the future of the Impact Player rule at its September meeting. Another meeting is expected within a month, when the issue is due to return for consideration.
Most franchises are opposed to the rule but believe it could remain for at least one more season. Some teams have also pointed to the fact that their squads were assembled with the existing regulation in place, favouring any potential removal being considered at a later stage.
Introduced to the IPL in 2023, the Impact Player provision allows teams to bring one substitute into a match from a group of designated options.
For now, the auction’s return to India has been settled, while the BCCI still needs to determine its host city and the Governing Council has yet to reach its final position on the Impact Player rule.
