The prospect of Hardik Pandya joining Chennai Super Kings ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season has gathered momentum after a trade package valued at more than ₹20 crore (US$2 million) emerged, potentially making it one of the biggest player deals in the competition’s history. According to a report by Hindustan Times, Chennai have offered a package featuring Shivam Dube, Dewald Brevis and ₹10 crore (approx. US$1 million) in cash as they attempt to secure the Mumbai Indians Captain.
Trade talks centre on CSK’s proposal
The offer comes after Mumbai Indians initially sought a different deal centred around young batter Ayush Mhatre alongside a cash component.
However, Chennai are unwilling to include the 19-year-old in any agreement, viewing him as a key part of the franchise’s long-term plans. Instead, the franchise has put forward Dube, Brevis and the additional cash payment in an effort to reach an agreement without sacrificing one of its most highly rated young players.
If completed, the package would carry a total valuation exceeding ₹20 crore (approx. US$2 million).
Mhatre’s future remains a key factor
One of the biggest sticking points in the negotiations is Mhatre’s place in Chennai’s plans.
The youngster impressed during IPL 2026 with an aggressive batting approach and a strike rate close to 180, establishing himself as one of the league’s emerging Indian talents. According to the report, Mumbai view him as an important long-term asset, while Chennai remain determined to retain a player they believe could play a significant role in the franchise’s future.
That difference in valuation has shaped the structure of the discussions, leading CSK to explore an alternative package built around more established players instead.
Why Hardik remains a premium target
Despite an underwhelming IPL 2026 campaign by his own standards, Hardik continues to be regarded as one of the competition’s most valuable Indian all-rounders because of his ability to contribute with both bat and ball while also offering leadership experience.
The 32-year-old scored 206 runs and claimed four wickets during the 2026 season, but his broader skill set and ability to balance an IPL squad continue to make him one of the most sought-after players in the market.
For Chennai, adding an Indian seam-bowling all-rounder with leadership credentials would address one of the most difficult roles to fill in franchise cricket, helping explain the club’s willingness to assemble such a substantial trade package.
No agreement confirmed as talks continue
Neither Chennai Super Kings nor Mumbai Indians has confirmed that a deal has been agreed.
Discussions remain ongoing, while Kolkata Knight Riders are also monitoring the situation and could enter the race if negotiations between the two franchises fail to produce an agreement.
