Hardik Pandya trade speculation checked as CSK and Mumbai Indians deny discussions over blockbuster IPL move

Both franchises have publicly dismissed reports linking the Mumbai Indians Captain with a move to Chennai Super Kings, while any decisions over player movements remain on hold until post-season reviews are completed.

Speculation surrounding Hardik Pandya‘s IPL future has been tempered after both Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians publicly denied that discussions are taking place over a potential trade involving the India all-rounder. The statements come after widespread reports linked Pandya with a possible move ahead of the 2027 season, making it one of the biggest talking points of the current IPL off-season.

The strongest response came from Chennai Super Kings, where Chief Executive Officer Kasi Viswanathan dismissed suggestions that the franchise has already begun exploring a deal for the Mumbai Indians Captain. Speaking to RevSportz, Viswanathan said: “CSK have not even reviewed the season yet, and we will only do so after the MLC (Major League Cricket) is complete.” He added: “I am currently in the United States. We have not spoken to anyone, and all that is being said about Hardik and CSK is untrue.” The franchise’s management is currently involved with Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket before turning its attention to reviewing the IPL season.

Mumbai Indians also struck a measured tone, indicating that no decisions regarding player trades will be considered until the franchise completes its own assessment of the season. A Mumbai Indians spokesperson told RevSportz: “We have just begun our post season review and will look into all aspects of the team.” The spokesperson added: “As with any review of this nature, a range of options and ideas will be evaluated before any decisions are made with regard to players, currently we are not engaged in conversations with regard to player trades, the same is only possible once the review is complete.”

The speculation has gathered pace following disappointing IPL 2026 campaigns for both franchises. Chennai Super Kings finished eighth after winning six of their 14 matches to end the season with 12 points, extending their run without a playoff appearance to three consecutive seasons. Mumbai Indians endured another difficult campaign, finishing ninth with eight points after winning four of their 14 matches, narrowly avoiding the bottom of the table on net run rate ahead of Lucknow Super Giants. Pandya featured in 10 matches during the campaign, scoring 206 runs at an average of 22.88 and a strike rate of 138.25, with a highest score of 40.

Trade rumours gathered momentum across the league

The official responses follow several days of growing speculation surrounding Pandya’s future after another disappointing IPL campaign for Mumbai Indians. Interest in the India international has remained strong despite the franchise’s struggles, reflecting his reputation as one of the competition’s leading all-rounders and an established captain with title-winning experience.

As previously reported by cricexec, Pandya had emerged as one of the most sought-after players in the current trade window, with seven IPL franchises reportedly showing interest in signing him. Chennai Super Kings were among the teams linked with the 32-year-old, while discussions were understood to be taking place across the league as franchises evaluated potential trade opportunities ahead of the 2027 season.

Review process remains the immediate priority

While both franchises have denied that trade discussions are currently underway, questions over Pandya’s long-term future continue to generate significant interest across the IPL. According to Cricbuzz, Mumbai Indians and Pandya are believed to have held preliminary conversations regarding his future with the franchise, although no details of those discussions have been made public. The report also stated that any decision on a possible trade is expected only after Mumbai Indians complete their post-season review.

For now, however, the latest confirmed position from both franchises is that their immediate focus remains on completing their respective season reviews before considering any decisions on player movements ahead of the 2027 IPL season.
