ST. JOHN’S, AntiguaCricket West Indies (CWI) has congratulated West Indies Women’s captain Hayley Matthews on winning the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for June 2025, marking her fourth time receiving the honor.

Matthews now shares the record for the most monthly ICC awards with Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner, underlining her status as one of the most consistent performers in international women’s cricket.

The 27-year-old Barbadian all-rounder earned the award for her outstanding performances during the white-ball series against South Africa, especially in the T20I series where she led the West Indies to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory.

Match-winning knocks power series comeback

After a modest 19 in the first T20I, Matthews delivered back-to-back match-winning innings — 63* in the second match and 65 in the decider — anchoring West Indies’ comeback from a 0-1 deficit to win the series. She was named Player of the Series for her 147 runs and two key wickets with the ball.

Her all-round contributions also extended to the preceding ODI series, where she scored 104 runs and picked up four wickets, including a crucial half-century in the second match. Though the West Indies lost the ODI series 2-1, Matthews was a standout performer throughout.

Matthews: “Individual awards reflect hard work”

“It’s always a good feeling to be named Player of the Month and I appreciate the recognition from the panel,” said Matthews.

“This past month was another strong one for me, and I was especially pleased with the way we played as a team to secure the T20I series win against South Africa.”

“Individual awards are never the goal, but they’re a reflection of the hard work that goes in behind the scenes. The focus now is on building momentum, for myself and for the team as we continue pushing towards bigger results and a stronger future for women’s cricket.”

A legacy of leadership and impact

Since her debut at just 16 years old in 2014, Matthews has been a cornerstone of West Indies Women’s cricket. She famously delivered a Player-of-the-Match performance in the 2016 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final, helping West Indies secure their first global title.

With this latest recognition from the ICC, Matthews continues to solidify her legacy as a leader and match-winner. Her leadership will remain central as the West Indies Women’s team looks ahead to critical international fixtures in 2026 and beyond.
