With the Pakistan Super League preparing for a major expansion, Hyderabad’s new franchise has moved swiftly to put its foundations in place. As anticipation builds ahead of the upcoming player auction, the ownership group has quietly finalised key elements of the team’s identity and leadership structure, signalling a long-term vision rather than a rushed entry into the league.
While speaking in an interview with Express Tribune, owner Fawad Sarwar confirmed that the franchise’s name and logo have already been locked in and that a formal reveal is imminent. “We’re planning a big event for the launch,” he said, indicating that the unveiling is likely to coincide with the auction window as attention across the league peaks.
Branding rooted in personal ties and long-term thinking
For Sarwar, the Hyderabad identity is more than just a market choice. He explained that the decision was driven by personal connection rather than branding convenience. “I’m originally from Hyderabad… when I learned we could name the team after any city, I immediately decided on Hyderabad,” he said, underlining the emotional investment behind the franchise.
That personal stake has been matched by financial commitment. Hyderabad secured its place in the league with a winning bid of PKR 1.75 billion (approx. US$ 6.25 million), a move Sarwar has previously framed as a long-term investment rather than a short-term commercial play.
Clear stance on captaincy and player recruitment
As speculation grows around squad composition, Sarwar made it clear that reputation alone will not dictate leadership roles within the team. “No player, whether Pakistani or foreign, has any inherent right to leadership just because he is a big name or senior,” he said, stressing that hierarchy will not override suitability.
He added that Hyderabad will follow its own internal evaluation before naming a captain. “We have our own selection process… a captain can be anyone, the key is to be a good leader. Whoever fits that profile will get the role,” he noted.
On marquee signings, Sarwar did not hide his admiration for Pakistan star Babar Azam but signalled patience before making any moves. “Of course, every team would want him,” he said, before adding, “For now, we haven’t thought about any other players. We’ll decide once we know who has been retained.”
Backing the auction model as PSL evolves
The Hyderabad owner also threw his support behind the PCB’s shift to an auction-based system for PSL 11, viewing it as a necessary evolution for the league. “There couldn’t have been a better step,” Sarwar said, arguing that auctions create a more performance-driven ecosystem and align the PSL with global sporting leagues.
Coaching staff takes shape ahead of debut season
Alongside branding decisions, Hyderabad has prioritised building a strong backroom team. Jason Gillespie has already been appointed head coach, bringing recent experience from Pakistan’s Test setup. To complement him, the franchise has added two familiar names with deep links to international and Pakistan cricket.
Announcing Grant Bradburn’s arrival as fielding coach, Kingsmen Cricket tweeted, “Leveling up every move 🔥 Hyderabad welcomes Grant Bradburn as Fielding Coach! 🙌 From drills to practice, he brings world-class experience to every corner of the field ⚡️”

With branding finalised, a coaching group in place, and a clear philosophy on leadership and recruitment, Hyderabad’s entry into the PSL is taking shape with deliberate intent — setting the stage for a closely watched debut season.
