Bangladesh’s participation in doubt amid political tensions
Speculation continues to swirl around Bangladesh’s involvement in the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup, but as of now, no steps have been taken by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to approach Scotland as a replacement option. According to a report by BBC Sport’s Timothy Abraham, there have been no discussions between the ICC and Cricket Scotland about a potential call-up, even as the tournament looms closer.
Bangladesh has informed the ICC of its unwillingness to travel to India due to escalating political tensions and has requested that its group-stage matches be relocated. This ongoing diplomatic impasse has sparked discussions about potential alternatives, with Scotland—the highest-ranked team not currently qualified—emerging as a theoretical replacement.
ICC’s replacement options and precedent
An ICC source, speaking to PTI, confirmed the governing body has imposed a deadline for clarity: “The BCB officials have been told to decide on the participation by January 21. If they refuse to travel to India, then they should be ready to be replaced by another team as per rankings.”
Historically, Scotland has filled similar gaps. In 2009, the side replaced Zimbabwe at the T20 World Cup after the latter withdrew for political reasons. However, the current qualification structure is based on regional tournaments, and any replacement now would likely be a discretionary decision rather than a straightforward swap.
Scotland stays on standby, but no official approach
Reports also suggest that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had requested a group-stage swap with Ireland, who are scheduled to play all their matches in co-host Sri Lanka. As per ESPNcricinfo, the ICC had received that request earlier this month. However, a spokesperson from Cricket Ireland indicated to BBC Sport that they have been assured no changes are being made to their current schedule, although they continue to monitor the situation.
Ireland group swap request adds another layer
Despite the uncertainties, Cricket Scotland has shown restraint. Officials have confirmed they will not initiate contact with the ICC “out of respect” for their Bangladeshi counterparts, as per a report by BBC Sport. The team is currently focused on preparations for a one-day international tri-series in Namibia and Oman this March.
As tensions persist and with time running out, the ICC faces mounting pressure to clarify contingency plans, especially with the tournament’s fixture list already locked. Moving Bangladesh’s matches to co-host Sri Lanka is seen as one alternative, but the board has so far been reluctant to implement venue changes.

For now, the situation remains fluid. While Scotland remains an eligible standby, their involvement hinges entirely on whether Bangladesh confirms participation—and if the ICC decides a replacement is necessary at all.
