India slip behind Pakistan in World Test Championship table after historic 0-2 whitewash at home

South Africa’s dominant Test series not only handed India a rare home whitewash, but also pushed them below Pakistan in the WTC 2025–27 standings.

India’s Test cricket crisis deepened on Wednesday after a 408-run defeat to South Africa in Guwahati, which sealed a 2-0 series whitewash on home soil. The result triggered an immediate shake-up in the ICC World Test Championship standings, with India slipping to fifth — behind arch-rivals Pakistan.

South Africa, meanwhile, surged to second place with a commanding 75% points percentage after collecting 36 points from four matches in the cycle. The outcome marked India’s first series defeat of the ongoing WTC campaign and their heaviest loss by runs in Test history.

South Africa complete rare series win in India

The series marked only South Africa’s second-ever Test series win in India — the first since 2000 under Hansie Cronje. It also represented a powerful response after their earlier loss to Pakistan in the same cycle.

In the decisive second Test, South Africa posted 489 in the first innings, powered by Senuran Muthusamy’s maiden international hundred (109) and Marco Jansen’s explosive 93. Jansen followed it up with a devastating 6 for 48, bowling India out for 201.

Tristan Stubbs’ fluent 94 in the second innings helped the visitors declare at 260 for 5, leaving India a target of 549. Despite brief resistance from Sai Sudharsan and Ravindra Jadeja, who top-scored with 54, India were dismissed for 140 on Day 5. Simon Harmer’s 6 for 37 sealed the win and the series.

The clean sweep put South Africa firmly in contention for a spot in the WTC Final — a spot India had qualified for in the first two editions.

India’s WTC slump raises structural concerns

India have now played nine Tests in the current WTC cycle, winning four, losing four, and drawing one. Their points percentage has dropped to 48.12%, and with Pakistan moving to 50% from just two matches, India have fallen one place to fifth.

The back-to-back home whitewashes — against New Zealand in 2024 and now South Africa — have raised serious questions about India’s Test setup, selection strategy, and long-standing home advantage.

The 2024 defeat to New Zealand had already exposed India’s spin vulnerabilities, and the Gautam Gambhir-led management has since overseen a transition marked by the retirements of stalwarts Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin.

While Shubman Gill was praised for leading the team admirably in England, the side has failed to carry that momentum into more recent contests. With no Tests scheduled until an away tour of Sri Lanka, India now face an extended break — a window that could be critical for rebuilding.

A major overhaul is expected ahead of India’s next home series against Australia in January 2027, with discussions likely to intensify around squad depth, pitch strategy, and the development of young red-ball players.
