Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to announce the first-ever Big Bash League match to be played in India during his visit to Australia this week, according to a report by Code Sports‘ Daniel Cherny. The proposed season-opening fixture would see the Melbourne Renegades take on the Perth Scorchers at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on December 12, subject to the remaining agreements being finalised.
If confirmed, the match would represent a landmark moment for Cricket Australia, marking the first time a BBL fixture has been staged outside Australia and highlighting the competition’s ambitions to expand its international reach.
Cricket Australia moves closer to overseas BBL milestone
The proposed fixture has been under development for several months as Cricket Australia explored the possibility of taking the BBL to one of cricket’s biggest markets.
Earlier this year, senior Cricket Australia executives Phil Rigby and Margot Harley travelled to India to assess the feasibility of hosting a BBL match. That work was followed by a visit from a five-member Cricket Australia delegation to Chennai, where officials inspected facilities at the MA Chidambaram Stadium and held discussions with the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association.
According to earlier reporting by SEN in February, Cricket Australia had already begun exploring the prospect of launching the upcoming BBL season with a match in India, with planning progressing significantly in the months since.
Chennai emerges as preferred venue
The MA Chidambaram Stadium has emerged as the preferred venue for the historic contest, with the Melbourne Renegades expected to serve as the designated home team against the Perth Scorchers.
The arrangement would require the Renegades to forgo one of their scheduled home fixtures in Australia in order to stage the match in Chennai.
Cricket Australia had initially examined the possibility of hosting multiple BBL matches in India. However, scheduling considerations have narrowed the proposal to a single season-opening fixture.
Final agreements still required
While the proposal has gathered momentum, several matters remain to be resolved before the fixture receives formal confirmation.
According to the report, discussions are continuing on the remaining agreements required for the match to be announced, while player-related commercial arrangements have also formed part of ongoing negotiations.
The proposed scheduling has also been designed to complement Cricket Australia’s broadcast plans, with the match expected to begin in the late afternoon local time following coverage of the opening Test between Australia and New Zealand in Perth.
Logistical challenges remain
Organisers must also address a number of operational considerations before the match can go ahead.
Travel remains one of the biggest challenges, with no direct commercial flights currently operating between Australia and Chennai. That would leave both teams facing journeys of up to 13 hours with stopovers, creating additional demands on the BBL schedule and player recovery.
Weather is another important factor. Chennai is typically affected by the northeast monsoon during December, while officials are also assessing the most suitable start time by balancing Australian television audiences with the atmosphere of a traditional evening fixture.
The expected announcement during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Australia would mark the latest step towards delivering what could become one of the most significant international expansion initiatives in the Big Bash League’s history, although the fixture remains subject to the completion of the remaining agreements.
