India’s emphatic victory in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has triggered a wave of celebration across the cricketing world, with legends, political leaders and global figures hailing the achievement as one of the greatest moments in the country’s sporting history.

The triumph — a commanding 96-run win over New Zealand in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad — made India the first team in men’s cricket to successfully defend a T20 World Cup title. It also secured the country’s third title in the format, more than any other nation.

From former captains to international diplomats, tributes poured in after India completed a campaign that further cemented its dominance in the shortest format.

Gavaskar calls back-to-back T20 World Cups historic

Among the strongest endorsements came from India batting legend Sunil Gavaskar, who described the achievement as a defining moment for the sport in the country.

“India’s trophy cabinet is quite full now,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

“Winning ICC trophies is not easy. Bilateral dominance is different. ICC tournaments have zero margin for error. You must bring your best every game.

“It takes skill, not luck. The pressure is huge and these players represent over a billion people when they step on the field. No team has won back-to-back T20 World Cups and defending a title is tough. Opposition teams come well prepared.

“Winning the T20 World Cup back-to-back is a massive achievement. This is the best moment in Indian cricket history,” the batting great said.

India’s victory capped a remarkable run in global tournaments in recent years, following the country’s T20 World Cup win in 2024 and Champions Trophy triumph in 2025.

Cricket legends hail India’s dominant campaign

Leading figures from across the cricket fraternity also praised the team’s performance throughout the tournament.

Former India captain Virat Kohli wrote on X, “Champions, Phenomenal win for Team India in Ahmedabad. Absolutely no match for the explosive cricket played by us throughout the tournament. Brilliant character shown by the boys to keep fighting in tough situations and become world champions once again. Congratulations to all the players and all the members of the management for achieving this feat. Jai Hind.”

Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar echoed the sentiment, highlighting the historic nature of the achievement.

“Winning the World Cup twice in a row, the first time any team has done so in the T20 format. Totally deserving and rightful winners of the trophy. What a fantastic performance by our team and a special brand of cricket on display. Well done, Team India. Jai Hind!”

Former India batter Wasim Jaffer pointed to the gap India has opened over rivals in the format.
